1) MATLAB: (MINOR PROJECT)

Design and develop the mathematical coding and plot graphs to analyze different parameters by taking the chemical reaction engineering problems.

The uses of MATLAB are very vast in Chemical engineering, it is very useful in understanding the physical phenomena of many chemical processes. There are tremendous use of several control schemes in chemical engineering, for example to control the temperature of the reactor in which exothermic reaction is taking place, for better control we need to understand the process completely and this can be easily understood by using MATLAB as MATLAB provide both qualitative and quantitative analysis of a processes.

By this software the lower order and higher order differential equations can be solved easily within a second. We can analyze the problems in the micro level by plotting the graphs. 2) PACKED BED DISTILLATION COLUMN: (MAJOR PROJECT)

Most of the processes in chemical industry are involved in purifying components. As a consequence, a large part of the energy use in many industrial sectors can be attributed to separation processes. Distillation is the dominant separation technology in chemical industries despite its huge energy consumption. Distillation consumes about 3% of the total energy consumed globally. The knowledge about distillation column is very important to every chemical engineering student. This project involves a detailed study of distillation column pre-installed in mass transfer operations lab. All the parts of the distillation setup are studied in depth and observations are noted down. During the project the limitations in the working of current setup are to be identified and worked upon. At the end of the project it is to be ensured that the distillation column gives precise output with minimum error keeping in mind the manual and operational limitations. Also the operation time is to be optimized.

The project was carried out to analyse the separation of methanol-water in packed bed distillation column. The project was conducted under total reflux condition. More readings should be taken to see the steady state of the distillation process. Vapour-liquid separation was done. A proper source of light should be provided while taking the readings of refractive index through the refractometer. The respective compositions were determined by the help of these refractive indexes. The minimum number of theoretical stages were calculated.

The simulation of packed bed distillation column was successfully done using Aspen Plus Software. The minimum number of stages obtained from Fenske equation for practical and experimental calculations were 2 under total reflux. This implies that our equipment was working fine.
