New Plataform z/os v1.7
Business Problem (Client Need)
Engagement background:
Banca March is one of the most important clients of IDC/GDC Argentina in the Europe Project (Spain),I 'm supporting them
with a 24X7 service from Olivos site. I started supporting them in March 2006 and the initial project was Platform Migration
(Z/OS v 1.4 to Z/OS 1.7).
Engagement Objectives:
The goal for this project was the database migration from Z/OS v 1.4 to Z/OS v 1.7 and this allowed us to continue
with the development of the new architecture of the client.
This migration was one of te main points of an actualization plan of the current versions and it was donw smothly in
order to allow the client to continue with theirs usual tasks and timelines. As main objective, the database support team
was in charge of the implementation of the XRC product in order to improve the Disaster Recovery solution (DB2 migration to Version 8).
Business Problem :
Client needs were to improve their bussiness updating the platform and improving their solutions. In the other hand they also wanted
to incorporate new products as well as those already present in the Z/OS. This form takes advantage in total form of the new system Z9 EC to which had been migrated in the IBM's Data Center Spain. The version 1.7 would serve to take advantage this improvement.
Solution
Technical Aspects:
1) A group of people with different skills meet togheter in order to be able to do the implementation.
The OS Sys Admin Team is responsible of the generation of SW levels (as a consecuence of the upgrade) which is integrated
in z tapes for each platform.
They implement the Z/OS system to migrate and ensure the system/subsystem quality and the OS components.
2) The Database Support Team, the one wich I belongs to, manage the information for each upgrade and handle actions needed
of the Database Managment System. I handle all the post instalation tasks needed in order to verify the system software that
was instalated, utilities, etc.
New updates were implemented in the DB2 and subsystems:
a) Z/OS MVS XRC+ support: allow data replication, which is managed by the System Logger, to other slot without impact to
the logging reports, which cannot be handled as for example in a disaster. Log data would be intact in the remote site with
the log database.
b) Enhancements to the support for Unicode in Z/OS V1R7: A new function is added in order to dinamically load the unicode tables
and it is not necesary to build a new image before using it.
Roles and Responsibilites:
My rol was to be the person in charge of all the actions needed to manage the whole migration from Z/OS V.1.4 to Z/OS v.1.7
of the new platform in the DB2 environment and associated products. The migration was done smothly and the results were
successfull.
I also created solutions and documented all the documents which can be used for future migrations. These also were used in
other migrations in Spain.IGS's customers.
Project Results
Challenges :
The main challenge was to run thru the migration process with no outages. This was the first migration implemented and
supported by the IDC/GDC Argentina and I didn't have too much time to complete the whole process. The client verified all
the systems were up and running no matter the complexity and impact of the migration.
Due to the successfull migration, I was able to migrate other systems in Spain. I was able to migrate all the Z/OS systems
from SPGIT IGS's customers this year.
Outocome:
The whole planification process for the migration was done in a month.
I learned and got experience in Z/OS V.17 and I'm able to support this service now. I'm also capable of implement the customers
solution in other due to my experience and seniority.
Lessons Learned:
In spite of the fact that I was a member of the database support Team, I got experience on the migration process and I have
learned about new technologies and how to deal with that. I also have learned about how to analyse and manage a full migration.
I am willing to take over new challenges now since I have the knowledge and tolls needed to face new implementations with
new technologies and in different environments. This will improve my proffessional skills as weel as my personal career goals.

Product Z/OS- Global Mirror(XRC)
Business Problem (Client Need)
Engagement background:
As part of the IDC /GDCA project, I worked in the Caja Sur facilities. This customer is one of our 24hs service accounts. Their main site is located at the city of Madrid, Spain . I started this project back on March 2006.
At the beginning of 2007, Caja Sur decided to implement a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP), in order to allow them keep operating from they Alternative Center, for a clean and continuos service.
Engagement Objectives:
- Restore and improvement of the Caja Sur Host Systems, located in IBM's CPD San Fernando de Henares at Madrid.
- Delivery of Recovery Services using the existing remote copy already implemented at the facility
- Meet the Service Level Objective of 6 hours for restore of Mission Critic Services
- Setup of the Alternative Center in IBM Madrid, using 100% of the storage capacity and 70% of processing power assigned to them.
Business Problem :
Caja Sur was in the need of implement a robust contingency plan that allow it to provide promptly services to their customers.
Mission Critical Services data restoration was specified in a special contract, which includes:
- A Maximun specified data lost of 24hs for the production systems(RTO).
- A Maximun Recovery of data of 48hs for the production systems (RPO).
At that time, the backup policy was composed by 4 different blocks:
- Data consistency backup
- Incremental Bakcup (prior to batch execution)
- Total Weekend Data Backup
- Total week operating System backup
Also, the movement of the data tapes consist in taking the copies to the Restore Center on the same day, in metalic boxes, closed by a lock and correctly identified.
Solution
Technical Aspects:
Improvement of the system started with an asyncronic on-going copy of all hard drives at the Production Center, to a secondary storage system located at the Secondary Center, using Z/OS GLOBAL MIRROR .
The storage system at the Secondary Center has double of capacity than the current one. This allow them to run a third weekly copy of the data using Flashcopy functions.
Because of this, Recovery of the service will take place in a matter of seconds, with minimun data lost. This "third copy" functionality allow to keep an updated copy of the XRC system (even when BC&RS tests are running), and guarantee a consistent data backup at the Seconday Site (even when the XRC system is syncronizing).
The Extended Remote Copy (XRC) from zSeries Global Mirror was configured from a Control System called Datamover, located at the Secondary Site. This system keeps an ongoing monitoring of the Hard Drives copy status, shooting alerts if any problem occurs.
In this way, the alerts will be responded in a on-duty model (7x24), in order to solve the issue as soon as possible.
Also, I have implemented daily process that will mantain XRC system configuration, which allows for addition of new disks or modification of existing ones.
This process also permits that the data is refreshed in the Secondary Site in less than 24 hours, where the XRC and Flashcopy systems are running.
Because of this, the customer reduced their outage times from 24/48hs to few minutes.
Roles and Responsibilites:
I was playing the Focal Implementation and Testing Leader role.
I completed the corresponding series of tests, with the associated documentation recommended by IDC/GDCA
Project Results
Challenges :
The biggest challenge was to conclude sucessfull tests of the Disaster Recovery System, having in mind that this technology was brand new at the IDC/GDCA.
Also, this was the first DR solution of this kind implemented by an Argentinian DBDC Team
As a result of a good teamwork, I have received a recongnition from the Customer, because the main goal of decreasing the Recovery Time was met.
Outocome:
Annual tests will be conducted in conjunction with the client to check data consistency in the remote copy at the Seconday Site, check the disaster recovery procedures and make a system performance check.
Also, a data lost secuency simulation of the Caja Sur main systems will be planned in advance, to check recovery times.
Lessons Learned:
In spite of the fact that I was a member of the database support Team, I got experience on the deployment process and I have learned about new technologies and how to deal with that.
I am willing to take over new challenges now since I have the knowledge and tools needed to face new implementations with new technologies and in different environments. This will improve my technical skills as weel as my personal career goals.
