RESEARCH PROJECT
EFFECT OF ALLOYING ELEMENTS ON MICROSTRUCTUE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF AZ91 MAGNESIUM ALLOY
Advisor: Prof. A. K.Mondal
The main aim of the project is to study the influence of alloying elements on the microstructure and impression creep behavior of AZ91 magnesium alloy. There is a significant increase in the consumption of magnesium
(Mg) alloys in automotive and defensive sector in the past few years as the requirement of lightweight to improve efficiency. Tragically, the AZ91 alloy has some drawbacks like uneven decrease in its tensile properties and creep resistance at higher temperatures (above 130 C) and this drawback can be overcome by adding alloying elements. The results reveal that addition of alloying elements refines the grain size and β- Mg17Al12
phase in the alloy, which is more effective with the combined addition. Apart from α-Mg and β- Mg17Al12
phases, an irregular shaped Al4Sr phases new and rod-shaped Mg3 Sb2 phases have formed following
the addition of Sr and Sb in the AZ91 alloy, respectively. In case of combined additions, both Al4Sr and Mg3Sb2
phases have formed. Among the alloys, the modified alloys show better creep behaviour than the AZ91 base alloy. The combined additions of Sb and Sr are more efficient in increasing creep resistance than the single additions due to the reduced amount of β-Mg17Al12 phase and presence of thermally stable Mg3Sb2
and Al4Sr phases at grain boundaries.
