Spatio-temporal mapping of forest encroachment using geospatial techniques-Sholur forest,The Nilgiris” during the period of January-April 2017 at Regional campus of Anna University ABSTRACT
Sustainable management of Forest ecosystem is necessary as it serves the important functions such as supplementing human dietary requirements, ecological significance in terms of biodiversity conservation, flood control, water purification and micro climate regulation etc. Hence, an inventory of reserve forest in a given area is a pre-requisite for their conservation and management. These forests are shrinking in recent years due to anthropogenic pressures, especially encroachment of lands for agriculture. It has led to forest fragmentation, loss of habitat and corridor for movement of wild animals, etc. The present study is focused on RS and GIS based assessment of forest encroachment in Shola forest for the years 1998,2003,2008,2013 and 2017 using Landsat TM/MSS for 1998, ETM+ for 2003 and 2008 and OLI/TIRS for the year 2013 and 2017 by applying supervised classification technique with maximum likelihood algorithm. Ground truth data from field observation were used to assess the accuracy of the classification. The change analysis showed that forest cover was decreasing in an alarming rate. The total encroached area between 1998 and 2017 is 1110.96ha and the rate of encroachment of the years 1998-2003 is 3.02%.The information maps generated out of this study will help the frontline forest officials to trace back and recover the encroached forests besides preventing future encroachments.
