As a neurosurgery nurse practitioner, I was responsible for rounding on patients in the hospital, both pre and post-op, seeing new admissions and direct admits in the ER, facilitating the care, diagnosis and management of consults and assisting with bedside procedures (ie EVD’s, SEPS drains, etc.). I initiated an interventional response, when necessary, and ensure OR orders and pre-operative diagnostics are completed. I took hospital call 2-3 nights per week to help manage inpatient and post-operative patient care. I also saw new and established patients in the office, for pre-op consultation and workups, hospital and post-op follow-ups and for emergent outpatient referrals (ie acute compression/spinal fractures, abnormal brain imaging/tumors or shunt malfunctions/adjustments). I ordered therapies, made referrals and worked closely and in conjunction with other medical teams (ie radiology, radiation-oncology, neurology and pain management) to most appropriately and diligently manage patient care.
