Grants:

This grant was targeted to diagnose and to treat the Pediatric patients with asthma. Recently we received an extension for another 15 months due to improving progress.

Target Educational Grant (2013): National educational grant awarded to clinicians who work dedicatedly to improve the literacy rates during the early ages of life. It is an annual grant that is only given to clinicians who work with low socio-economic status and in not for profit organization. This grant was only obtained by Pediatric department within the TTU Permian basin campus.

Centring Implementation grant (2018): Collaborative grant with OBGYN to help address parenting issues and improve post-natal health with special emphasis on first time mother. Also address issues of teenage pregnancy and infant mortality.

Environmental Integrity Project Grant(2020): Community outreach and education service grant to improve the asthma awareness in Permian Basin and help promote better asthma control.

Teaching experience:

School of Medicine: I teach medical students during their clinical, inpatient and nursery rotation in their third and fourth clinical years. I also mentor students and help them in planning their research projects, encourage community activities and connect them to the possibly community outreach programs.

School of Health Professionals: Due to increasing need within the sub-urban and rural communities for primary care, I have started getting involved in teaching the primary providers that mainly includes the Physician Assistant (PA). I teach PA students every clinical rotation for a period of 6 week during their pediatric ambulatory rotation. I even give small lectures on common pediatric problems and talk to them about common challenges a paediatrician encounters in the real life.

Family Medicine Residency Program: As part of clinical teaching, I lecture the family residency program with some common pediatric disease as a part of their grand rounds and didactics sessions. (August 2012 to present). I teach the first and second year residents during their clinical pediatric rotation provide short lectures and quizzes and encourage active participation. I specifically focus on the common problem that is encountered in Ector County- Pediatric Asthma.

School District Teaching: Teach ECISD (Ector County school district) nurses about asthma management and introduce the concept of control among the school children.

Community Outreach activities as a Community Leader:

Community activities to promote literacy: Spring into reading – a community event to encourage reading and promote literacy at an early age. This event was conducted for two consecutive years. During this event I work with medical students and residents encourage them to reach out to children in libraries, school and encourage them to attend an afternoon of fun and activities. We have the news readers and locally famous public figures read a book for us and give message about health, nutrition and activity to encourage healthy life style as well. By doing so, we give message to the community to encourage early literacy. By having the local leaders involved we try to make an attempt to have a positive impact reading a book to their child and reading it aloud every day.

Asthma education program: Through the federal grant from department of State Health Services of Texas funded through Centre for Medicaid and Medicare services, I am currently working on asthma awareness and education program not only to our Ector county children but also involve their parents and significant family members in maintaining a good compliance and control thus preventing recurrent asthma attacks. I was surprised to see that even the teenagers in the community are dependent on nebulizer machines and have no knowledge about inhalers leading to recurrent absences from school and other sports activities which prompted me to conceptualize this education program. This program created awareness among the school population and we had good response from the school district nurses who were willing to participate in improving their school’s asthma control.

School Education: Asthma-Asthma was the #1 cause of school absences in academic year 2013-2014 when we started our program at Texas Tech clinic and actively involved with school nurses, pharmacies and constantly monitor these asthmatic children. I make timely referrals to specialists and communicate with them so we all are on the same page in terms of treatment. I constantly get feedback from the school nurses and was fortunate to have some really good helpers in the community. My next plan is to add asthma education to the school curriculum so not only the nurses but the physical educators, social worker, counsellors and school teachers are aware of some warning signs and seek medical attention promptly so we can prevent what happened in year 2012/2013 with two asthmatic children. Through this program, I intend to help decrease the unexpected adverse effects of asthma attacks and help improve the quality of life and let kids be kids- in enjoying their sports and school environment.

Asthma awareness event: to educate the community about the concept of asthma control, need to follow up with the physician for appropriate management of asthma, I conducted asthma awareness program within Texas Tech campus with co-operation from our regional Dean. Here we had good response from almost 50 families who showed up asking for more information and follow up appointments during the event. I teamed up with some local respiratory therapists, school nurses and tech nurses to briefly screen the patients within the limits of our resources and hook them up to a medical home. We were able to direct all the families and connected them to either family medicine or Pediatric medicine depending on their age. We were able to create confidence among the participants that asthma can be controlled and educated them that it is ok to live with asthma as long as the patient and the family are aware of the signs and symptoms and how important it is to follow up with your clinician.

Health education at public schools: Ector county ranks high in teenage pregnancy and a primary care clinician my aim has always been to prevent this as much as we can. But I realized that my role is not limited to my clinic but I need to explore outside the campus to catch the patients early, educate early and postpone as much as I can the sexually transmitted disease along with pregnancy and its complications. I teamed up with Dr.Brown (from OBGYN department at Texas Tech) to teach our community the importance of education about human reproductive system and diseases. As part of the science curriculum at junior high and in collaboration with national program on sex education”Big Decisions” to educate young girls and boys, we (Pediatrics+OB departments) go to public schools (junior high) to talk about some important decisions the kids make and bring awareness on decreasing the teen pregnancy rates and to fight with increasing rates of STI (Sexually transmitted diseases). We targeted on bringing the awareness of pregnancy among the teenagers and educated the about some irreversible sexually transmitted disease, ways to avoid them and thus help in controlling the rate of teen pregnancy, school drop-out rates and improved sexual health.

Super Parent classes- I noticed that lack of education to the parents also leads to a lot of medical and psychological problems. I collaborated with OBGYN department and started “Super parent “classes. These classes are open to public and we invited local leaders, school principals and parents to come up with their concerns. We discussed some common challenges at home, at school and at other places. I focussed on: 1. Tween: who are not teens yet but struggle daily in their lives, I discuss what challenges the kids face and how can we help as parents. 2. Bullying: at school and outside school, how can we identify the subtle signs of bullying as parents and help our kids. 3. Peer pressure: Positive and negative peer pressure issues. 4. Problematic Internet Use and “Sexting” a new growing challenge.

Training First Responders: Educating the basic and simple life saving measures to the first responders/non-medical professionals at the trauma site and aid in buying the crucial time while transit to the emergency care services. Conducted this event in collaboration with Dept. of Surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Free flu clinics: We conducted two free flu vaccination clinic in collaboration with school district and Dept. of Health [DOH] an immunized atleast 200+ patinets with asthma and un-insured or underinsured.

International Community event: National pulse polio event- conducted in the sub-urb and rural areas of Andhra Pradesh, India.
