Turkish Red Crescent Trainer Training, Ankara 2016 Employment Company: Refugee Support Center March 2018 – December 2019 Refugee Support Center / Ankara, Turkey

Occupation: Field Worker/Team Leader

Type of Sector: Humanitarian Aid Operation-International Protection/Asylum seekers, Migrations and Refugees (Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo etc.) and Temporary Protection/Syrians Main Activities and Responsibilities;

I have worked as a social worker and team leader in refugee support centers in the provinces of Eskişehir, Ordu, Elazığ, Kilis, and Ankara in Turkey. I worked with Iranian, Iraqi, Afghan, Congo, Somali, and Syrian refugees in the scope of international protection and temporary protection. During this period, I worked with women, men, young people, LGBTI and children who are the concern of different aspects of social work. This project was the first mobile team project in Turkey. In task scope, in all provinces and districts in Turkey where non- governmental organizations were either non-existent or insufficient in number, our team of six provided psycho-social support in a mobile caravan. We provided service in the province, where we worked for 3 weeks and then returned to Ankara for a week and reported on our service. According to the situation of each of the cases we encountered in the field, we provided follow-up continuity by referring them to the appropriate institutions. I was also dealing with all kinds of more routine refugee problems (identity registration, work permits, school records for kids, Turkish course records for refugees, etc.) and I was finding solutions to these problems for beneficiaries. In addition, I was there to support my teammates as a team leader at points where they lacked knowledge, and I was working, referring, providing psycho-social support and activities according to the sensitivity and cultural values of the cases. I had responsibility for the field team's accommodation, transportation, and event plan for all kinds of activities as well. I had also financial responsibility for events and for arranging the hotel where our team stayed, etc. 3

Company: Turkish Red Crescent July 2016 – December 2017 Kilis Community Center of the Turkish Red Crescent / Kilis, Turkey Occupation: Social Worker/Case Manager

Type of Sector: Humanitarian Aid Operation-Temporary Protection/Syrians Main Activities and Responsibilities;

I worked as a social worker and case manager in the Syrian Crisis Humanitarian Aid Operation at the Kilis (a border city between Syria and Turkey) Community Center of the Turkish Red Crescent for 18 months. During that period I worked with Syrian women, men, young people, and children that were interested in areas of social work in Kilis province; disabled people, LGBTI, drug addicts, victims of incest, street children, victims of early marriage, child-parent, separated children, single-parent families, female victims of violence, children who cannot access school, etc. I cared for each case separately. I took care that my cases of drug-addiction were hospitalized for treatment. I provided state protection support for cases such as a child separated from its family, a street child, a victim of violence, and a girl who had been the victim of early marriage. I convinced the family to make school enrollment for the children and make use of the conditional cash transfer for her education. For LGBTI cases, I provided telephone support from the KAOSGL (it is a non-governmental organization working with all kinds of problems of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex individuals) association in Ankara and psycho-social support with a psychologist in Kilis community center. War victims, people who have lost their limbs for all ages of people, I've provided care in response to medical support requests. Within the scope of the headings I mentioned, the lack of long-term non-governmental organizations in the province of Kilis, provision of financial support by short term associations led me to lead in my cases. I also did fieldwork in Syria and practiced my profession. In the camps of Azez in Syria, I conducted fieldwork research with the help of an interpreter. After that, I worked to appropriate aids for the project in order to support those in need. I was the only social worker who worked in the realization of services such as family reunification, treatment of cases with health issues, letter of notification and reporting cases. These activities were all performed while working in cooperation with local authorities and non- governmental organizations.

I would like to say these years when I worked in Kilis were the most dangerous times of Kilis. In operations such as "Euphrates Shield" and "Olive Branch", bombs were falling on Kilis very frequently. I worked there under these hard conditions because I like to help people and I like my work. Additionally, a different contribution to my skill from Kilis province; I started to learn Arabic whilst among the Syrian refugees.

In addition to being a social worker, I also worked as a trainer in the Turkish Red Crescent. One of the subjects for which I provided the training was gender inequality and the other was the education of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Consequently, I was one of the five people who prepared the gender education module of the Red Crescent Association. I provided training for the beneficiary and the staff on topics such as gender-based violence, anger control, time management and communication techniques too.

In addition to all of these, I have not only used the information I obtained from the field for my professional life but also developed my academic career to actively contribute to and further develop the scientific field.
