ASSIGNMENTS EDITOR, KDAF-TV, DALLAS

1998-2018

Initially recruited by KDAF-TV to assist in start-up of a locally-based news department.

Coordinate logistics of news coverage for the daily newscasts, assign stories to reporters and photographers, collaborate on story line development, handle multiple news gathering channels, and launch live coverage, e.g. reporters and photographers, live trucks and satellite truck. Managed schedule for newsroom staff of 40+ people. Develop and maintain relationships with Public Relations contacts in government, non-profit, sports franchise and corporate entities.

Part of the design and implementation of Local News Service (LNS), a cooperative news gathering service for three local stations. As the Assignments Editor for LNS, built relationships at other stations and deepened relationships in the community. Coordinated daily coverage with respective stations' personnel, including communication of story pipeline with multiple levels of station management and coordination of news feeds to partner stations.

ASSIGNMENTS EDITOR, KDFW-TV, DALLAS TX

1998

Coordinate all news coverage for the daily newscasts, develop relationships with local PR departments, manage assignments, develop story lines, manage multiple news gathering tasks, and launch live coverage, e.g. live trucks, helicopter, and satellite truck. As the primary assignments editor covering the early morning shift, was responsible for establishing the framework for all stories to be developed later in the day.

NEWS DIRECTOR, WMGC-TV, BINGHAMTON NY

1996-1998

Executive Producer for two daily newscasts. Responsible for budgeting and major purchases. Other duties included pre-approval, writing and/or editing of scripts, editing video, assignments, story line development, coaching anchors and reporters in on-air deliveries.

Supervised a staff of 12 and was accountable for staff skills and professional development. Wrote News Department training and operations manual. Developed employee mentoring program.

ASSIGNMENTS MANAGER, KDRV-TV, MEDFORD OR

1993-1996

Single point of logistical coordination for newsroom. Coordinated all department news coverage, assigned stories to reporters and helped develop story lines, edited video, and oversaw all incoming and outgoing news transmissions. Supervised a staff of 20 people and supported budgeting process. Oversaw the station’s conversion to new tape formats (including equipment purchase, testing, training and implementation.)

When the station wanted to add a live local morning news show to air before Good Morning America, I researched other markets’ local morning newscast programs. Out of my research, I co-created the #1 rated local morning newscast in the area and appeared on-air for a daily feature that wrapped up the show for the day, previewed the evening newscast, and added an element of fun to the show.

NEWS DIRECTOR, WBSG-TV, JACKSONVILLE

1992

Executive producer for two daily newscasts. Supervised a staff of 16 people. Wrote, approved and/or edited all reporters’ scripts for the daily newscasts. Shot and edited news stories, created graphics and produced as needed. Planned and managed the news department budget. Created and produced a special hurricane preparation program in the wake of Hurricane Andrew.

NEWS OPERATIONS MANAGER, KUVN- TV, DALLAS

1989-1991

Recruited by KUVN to reinvigorate the news department to compete with other established newscasts in the Dallas market. In addition to standard supervisory responsibilities, story production and editing, primary focus was to coach an inexperienced staff of 10 in newsroom best practices. Collaborated with team to improve logistics coordination, on-air delivery, video production, and satellite feeds. Created all graphics and special sets, as needed. Implemented procedures to integrate the station's first live truck into the newscasts. Improved overall quality of two daily newscasts.

KXAS – TV, CNN, KDFI-TV - DALLAS

May 1981 – October 1989

Held positions as Chief Photographer, Photographer, and Producer. Responsibilities included producing stories, as well as shooting and edit tape for daily newscasts. Covered events including Dallas plane crashes, earthquakes in Mexico, and Hands Across America.
