Course Projects

Numerical Investigation of Biogas Fuelled HCCI engine

• The effect of equivalence ratio and Intake Charge Temperature for Varying Biogas Composition is studied using CHEMKIN Single Zone and Multi Zone Thermodynamic Models.

• A Closed Cycle Three Dimensional CFD simulation is carried out using CONVERGE to study the effect of varying biogas composition on Combustion Stability, Combustion Phasing and Emission Characteristics. Simulation of a 4 stroke Spark Ignited (SI) Port Fuel Injected (PFI) Gasoline Engine using CONVERGE

• The CAD geometry is cleaned up, the simulation parameters are set and the physical models are studied.

• The combustion, emission and performance characteristics of the engine is analysed. Simulation of a 4 stroke Diesel Engine to Study the Effect of Piston Bowl on Emissions using CONVERGE

• The simulation is executed using a sector model of the engine, the physical models & the simulation parameters are studied.

• A comparative study is made on emission and performance characteristics of Omega and Open-W piston bowl profile. One dimensional modelling of a Gasoline Engine and its After-treatment system using GT-POWER

• The physical parameters related to the Flow and after-treatment circuit of the simulation model is analysed.

• The effect of air-fuel ratio (AFR) on after-treatment conversion efficiency is studied. One dimensional modelling of an Engine for tractor application using GT-POWER

• The engine fuel type, engine configuration and other engine parameters are analysed and selected to meet the given performance targets.

• Thermodynamic Analysis is carried out to understand the energy losses inside the engine. Solving the 2-D (two dimensional) Heat Conduction Equation using Numerical methods in MATLAB

• The Finite difference method (FDM) is used to discretize the Heat equation and it is solved using iteration techniques.

• The stability analysis is carried out for an unsteady problem using explicit and implicit approach. Simulation modelling of 1-D (one dimensional) Supersonic flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle in MATLAB

• The governing equations of the fluid flow are solved using McCormack method.

• The effect of conservative and non-conservative form of the governing equation on solution parameters are studied. Parsing thermodynamic data file in MATLAB

• The thermodynamic data file is parsed to calculate the thermodynamic values of the species using NASA polynomials.

• The thermodynamic values are plotted for a given temperature range for all the species. Fluid Flow through a backward facing step in STAR-CCM+

• The effect of Reynold’s number on the fluid flow is studied. The Reynold’s averaged Navier Stokes equation (RANS) approach is used to study turbulence in the fluid flow.

• The effect of different turbulence models for a given Reynold’s number is studied. The effect of different wall treatment models is studied.

Internship

Automotive engines internship (Jan 2017)

• A detailed study on various parts of the engine and their working principles

• A Technical Report was made to downsize a 1.2 Litter Petrol Engine with High Power-Weight Ratio and Low Engine Friction.

• A practical session on Assembly and Dis-assembly of 4 stroke and 2 stroke engines. Publication & Presentation
