Senior Executive Vice President / Head of Refinery, Petrochemical & Gasification Complex, 2012 to 2019

Promoted through multiple roles to serve as Senior EVP leading refinery, petrochemicals, captive power plant, and utilities teams with 700+ employees in achieving operational excellence at world’s largest refinery and petrochemical complex and India’s largest company with annual revenues of $90B+. Beginning in 2018, directed gasification & air separation unit (ASU) teams responsible for safe pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, and shutdowns at Special Economy Zone (SEZ) Pet coke Gasification complex to exploit price delta between natural gas and synthetic gas produced from coke to maximize overall gross refinery margin (GRM).

Refinery & Petrochemical Complex: 650KBPSD crude distillers, 210-KBPSD FCCU, 160-KBPSD Coker unit, 2MMTPA aromatics capacity, 1MMTPA polypropylene, 375-MW captive power plant (9 GTs with HRSGs, 6 STGs, 6 auxiliary boilers), six large desalination units, four nitrogen units, and large effluent treatment plant.

Gasifier Complex: Six trains of gasifier with total 18648 TPD of processing capacity, syngas generation capacity equivalent to 14MMSCMD of natural gas, and three trains of ASUs with 5250 TPD oxygen production capacity.

Key Achievements:

Chaired Site Performance Evaluation Team and conducted annual performance appraisal.

Served as executive sponsor of site-wide safety Audit/Observation team driving Process Safety Management.

As Revamp Project Manager (525M US$), very safely and successfully implemented Delayed Coker capacity from 175000 to 220000 bbl per day, enabling processing of heavy sour crudes to maximize GRM of ~$2 per bbl.

Accomplished Jamnagar phase 3 (J3) project very safely with no HSE incidents across all interconnection jobs, including tie-ins, new lines, new pipe racks, and jobs in existing pipe racks connected to J3 units from existing J1 & J2 Refinery process units. Piping scope: Domestic Tarif Area (DTA) 2.56M IM ~297 km total pipe length and SEZ 2.93M IM ~258 km total pipe length; tie-ins scope: ~800 nos cold taps and 220 nos hot taps; new pipe racks scope: 26 nos and modification work in 30 nos existing pipe racks.

Led safe commissioning with no disturbance from feed cut into product out for Benzene Recovery Unit upgrade for gasoline and Benzene recovery using in-house process developed jointly with IIP-Dehradun.

Prepared, monitored, and reviewed team key result area (KRA) guidelines and conducted mid-year and annual reviews for all DTA, SEZ, and Oil Movement & Storage (OM&S), and support services departments.

Launched Reliance Safety Observation Procedure (ReSOP) video of six-step process that is widely used as effective tool to improve ReSOP quality and facilitated training to improve behavior safety of employees.

Managed first time implementation of robust new device and procedure for high-risk inert entry job during DHT-1 catalyst change for error-free turnaround and safe shutdown/restart, minimizing downtime of units.

Enabled quick response to diesel domestic market demand and achieved higher realization by identifying line from aromatics to DHT and SRHN blending through allowable flash point limit.

Head of Oil Movement and Storage (OM&S), 2007 to 2012

Managed single facility serving both J1 & J2 (DTA & SEZ) refineries, including refinery tank farm, marine tank farm, rail & road tank farm, and marine terminal that was crucial to sustaining refinery operations and entire supply chain.

Facilities: More than 325 tanks and 42 spheres, biggest tank for Crude (92 MRT DIA X 20 MRT Ht.), five berths, five single point mooring systems (SPM), one roll on-roll off (RORO) jetty, more than 10M KL storage capacity for feedstock and finished products, annual volume of 114 MMT, and handling of more than 1400 ships, including VLCCs.

Key Achievement:

Safety and successfully de-bottlenecked Jetty berths as a part of J2 expansion project without impacting loading operations through early commissioning SPM5 diesel service line and dispatching of diesel through SPM during Jetty berth modification process as workaround avoiding refinery cutting throughputs.

Managed world’s largest single location paraxylene producer with total aromatics production capacity of 2.4MMTPA and 1MMTPA polypropylene, including safe revamping of aromatics unit and commissioning of one train of polypropylene as part of Value Maximization Project (VMP).

Promoted from earlier roles as Vice President/Plant Manager of DTA Coker; Plant Manager of Paraxylene and Utilities Plants; and Site Shift Manager.
