Evaluation of Effects of Ginkgo Biloba extract on spatial memory

(University Final Year Research Project)

Abstract: Ginkgo leaf extract (GLE) improves brain blood flow and contains antioxidant components, and has also shown beneficial effects in neurological diseases. In this study, I investigated the effects of GLE on spatial memory impairment and hippocampal neuronal loss caused by stress. This experimental study included 28 adult male Wistar albino rats, which were placed under stressful conditions using forced swimming tests and the Barnes maze. GLE was administered orally every day for two weeks and its effects on memory impairment and hippocampal tissue damage were investigated. Spatial memory was assessed in Barnes maze for four days, then the brains of the animals were extracted, and after tissue staining hippocampal tissue, damage evaluated by neuronal count.

Results: Latency to find the platform in the Barnes maze was significantly increased in the stress-induced group compared to that in the control group, while administration of GLE to stress-induced animals significantly reduced the latency to find the platform. In addition, stress reduced hippocampal neuronal count and administration of the Ginkgo extract in stress-induced animals significantly improved hippocampal neuronal loss.

Conclusion: GLE significantly improved spatial memory impairment and hippocampal neuronal loss, induced by stress.
