Work Experience
Correctional Medical Physician with Focus on Virginia State QI and UM FLUVANNA CORRECTIONAL CENTER FOR WOMEN - Troy, VA
February 2020 to Present
It goes without saying that the correctional doctor has a tremendous role in the provision of medical care. However, our roles often goes far beyond seeing patients and giving care. Not only must the correctional physician manage health care, we also have a significant administrative role in direct health care, the system of health care, health care policy, procedures, and standards including initiating quality improvement and utilization management. My experience in correctional medicine allows me to execute my knowledge and expertise in the medical field, while balancing the interests of the Virginia State medical board requirements, court findings for the patients, safety and security of the facility, the individuals in the facility, and the community. Working in this environment revigorated my continued interest in helping the public attain solid medical care mainly due to the impacts of COVID-19, which helped to uncover the disparities in people attaining good healthcare. While I have served both private and public sectors, my innate interest has always focused on servicing the public. I am personally and professionally aware of the challenges and complexities of providing consistent healthcare across our beautiful state of Virginia. I am convinced that the main problem for Virginians becoming a healthier state of people is due to the following facets: lack of access to healthcare due to affordability of enrollment costs and deductibles, poor perceptions and distrust of the medical system and simple ignorance on the importance of preventative health. I have the skills, energy and compassion to help initiate and navigate a plan to successfully execute a Health Benefit Exchange for Virginia. I would love to share my vision and work as a team player to help our state improve our insurance marketplace, while keeping our tax dollars to benefit the greater good and health of our fellow Virginians.
