Personal statement
I am pursuing a career as a specialist in general adult psychiatry with a special interest in mood disorders and addiction. Having completed 5 years of training in Psychiatry, I have gained a wealth of expertise in the management of psychiatric disorders in most sub-specialties and age groups. Whilst I continued, over the next 14 years to develop specialist skills in psychiatry, I am keen to gain experience in a new culture, while contributing to the mental wellbeing of the population, and continuing my commitment to lifelong learning, professional development, research, and clinical audit.

Duties and Achievements
I was involved in the day-to-day running of a busy inner-city service that consistently met the targets set by the National Treatment Agency (NTA). I managed patients from multicultural backgrounds; mainly the homeless and asylum seekers with complex physical and psychosocial needs. I had direct involvement with, and provided advice and training to services across various levels. I covered a busy A&E department where I regularly used brief interventions and I often undertook assessments in primary care, the district general hospital, antenatal clinic, prisons, and psychiatric inpatient settings.
I have led the team and the multidisciplinary meetings, created an academic educational programme and organised talks by individuals from various backgrounds and disciplines, including previous service users. In conjunction with the team’s pharmacist, I developed information leaflets and pathways for patients undergoing opiate and benzodiazepine stabilisation and detoxification. Finally, as a part of service improvement consultancy, I carried out audits and service user satisfaction surveys and facilitated a service user forum.

I have experience in didactic and problem based teaching including the use of videotaped patient interviews, workshops, and interactive sessions for evidence-based teaching in an open, non-threatening discussion environment.
