The Branch addresses diseases and other problems that require statewide coordinated resources

implements programs that protect California’s public health and animal agriculture, and ensures the availability, affordability, and wholesomeness of food. One of the responsibilities of the Animal Health Branch is the early detection and prompt eradication of serious animal diseases in California. This is accomplished through the operation of statewide

emergency disease eradication projects/programs, such as the current virulent Newcastle disease

(vND) response, and the mobilization of emergency response teams when necessary that are

comprised of a mixture of professional, administrative, and technical staff. Virulent Newcastle

disease is a highly contagious poultry disease, which is currently in its mitigation stage in parts of

Southern California.

Under general direction of the Supervising Veterinarian, the Staff Services Manager I (SSM I) acts

as part of the Incident Management Team. Specifically, the individual will direct the work of vND

responders, oversee the development and implementation of training for staff, perform personnel

actions including performance evaluations and disciplinary actions and apply sound administrative

and fiscal practices.
