Records Validation 2015
My primary task was to populate and validate records including cad design, as-built. I would use ArcFM to update GIS manage, monitor work progress and quality control GIS input. Consult with gas pipeline records people and GIS staff on project needs and information requirements.
Africoast Engineers 2008 - 2013
GIS Manager
My primary task was to supervise a team of staff; including cartographers, data managers, analysts and support specialists. I would initialize projects then manage, monitor work progress and budget costs. Consult with clients on project needs and information requirements.
I would arrange all the recruiting and training of staff. Contractual staff was hired per project need, with contracts I would create together with the help of a labor broker. For future business I would negotiate ad hoc contracts with staff or with clients.
I would have to monthly bill the client. Submit this together with a covering letter indicating milestones met and project progress.
I would conduct and arrange all GPS work. This involved coordinating an initial onsite visit for assessment of the scope of work to be carried out. This scope would be analyzed for allocation to office staff.
During and after the project I was the primary reporting analyst and documentation specialist. I performed as the delivery manager for both internal and external clients.
When the software needed upgrading I would consult with the IT department, make sure of specifics to manage the development of GIS software packages and technical bugs that might incur after the install process. A period of time thereafter monitor the functionality of systems making sure to keep the unit up-to-date with new technology, but never to fall behind with the on-going project milestones.
SIDA (seconded to Buffalo City Municipality GIS Unit) 2003 – 2008
GIS Specialist and coordinator
I was tasked to perform as an information knowledge management specialist. My primary task would be to insert information into the corporate database. Using an ELT process from various sectors feed data into a common store house facility called the SDE or spatial data engine.
Databases needed to have staff access on three levels of ability, User, Creator and Systems Administrator. I would apply the correct permissions to the SQL databases for writers and readers of the corporate database.
I had to manually load and maintain the license to servers when modifications to the databases were made. I did desktop support troubleshooting for staff with access to the corporate server or by an onsite visit to repair their serve or for any technical queries that could not be managed via desktop help.
The CityMap was a frontend used by the municipality to show its clients, via the internet, where their utilities and services lay spatially, in relation to their land parcel. I would be responsible for the ETL, to the CityMap. This meant input and continual adding of layers to the IMS server which ran in the background to run this operation.
The Basemap and all the layers were managed and updated regularly. The primary layer used was the cadastral. All subsequent layers had to be corrected topologically to this layer. This would give staff seamless integrating for viewing their data. The cadastral ETL process was managed through data purchased from the Surveyor General’s office that coordinated all the deeds information. I would then clean and import it into our system.
All ad hoc mapping was mapped, printed and distributed on request.
I was assigned as the trainer to the SIDA, (Young Consultants), hired consultants as well staff and councilors of the wards that were within Buffalo City Municipality.
Coordination of the office work, including the reception duties, admin and report writing was performed by me. Making request and following up of all official requisitions, assessed needs for the office was done through municipal procurement channels.
I coordinated and managed the monthly Technical User Group (TUG) meetings. The stakeholders from all the sectors of the municipality had to be involved as it was ultimately their data used in the GIS. Namely Deeds Office, Financial Department, Electricity, Water, Sewer, Storm water and Road Departments.
Periodically I was tasked to arrange accommodations for a Sida representative who would come to South Africa from Sweden to see to the progress of the projects they funded. This would include meeting schedules, attending to work related requirements and auditing the project milestones. Site visit would be arranged for them to see the progress made. This representative was elected to correlate the Twinning Program with the Gavle Municipality in Sweden. I was required to go to Sweden to give reports and attend training.
Monthly exception reporting and budget reconciliation had to be done in a specific format; this had to be posted to Sweden for payment and acceptance. Monthly timesheets has to be verified and punched into the system manually.
I had to liaising with the IT Department for all the GIS requirements, including software upgrades, server connectivity and basic repair to the computers.

GIS, Road Mapper and Assisting with Design
My primary task was to create shapefiles of all access roads to new and existing emergency service areas e.g. school, hospitals and clinics. This required me to interpreting land data into shapefile via digitization or ELT for mapping.
I did the tutoring of field staff on the use of mapping and map reading.
I performed all the project management duties on the above access roads and reported to the Civil Engineers on budget costing and progress. Mapping was done on an ad hoc basis.
Funders such as USaid and SIDA required presentation of milestones. I got this information from meetings convened for technical staff and would report back in writing and with presentation on progress made.
