In charge of Equipment-Secured Financing business for Latin America (LATAM).
- Proposed to and got approved by the bank’s board a regional business plan to build from ground up; implemented and oversaw the business, hired a team, developed with Risks initial credit risk acceptance criteria, and monitored goals & metrics.
- Structured multi-party, multi-country deals, negotiated contracts under US law for asset-secured loans and leases (operating and capital leases with accounting and tax benefits to US-GAAP lessors, and lessees) with control over the assets financed and the receivables generated, increasing returns and reducing risks and capital allocation; directly involved on internal discussions with Legal and Risks.
- Implemented asset management support, targeting top-tier brands and manufacturers, negotiating first loss protection or partial guarantees with vendors, projecting fair value x secondary market, defining return conditions, tracking assets, enforceable insurance, doing periodic inspections, and keeping documentation.
- Reached a US$400 million regional portfolio with top-tier industries: Transportation, Construction, Printing, IT, Private jets and helicopters. -Reached and kept it for years the leadership in private aircraft, cross-border leasing in Brazil (over 25 aircraft there), competing with Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Citibank and others.
- Participated in the structuring of a tailor-made, IT-secured financing to the
“ENCICLOMEDIA” project in Mexico (Secretariat of Public Education - SEP) to equip classes of several grades with laptops, printers and monitors; invested US$220million in a 3-year period, competing with larger foreign and local banks.
- Founded, ran and served as a board member, the bank’s leasing company in Mexico; oversaw its activities hiring a local sales team and external auditors in Mexico, and an ample Service Level Agreement with the bank’s administrative office in Panama.
CITIBANK INTERNATIONAL
VP, Regional Head of Equipment Finance 1994 - 2006 MIAMI
Co-founder of the Latin America Asset Based Finance/Leasing (ABF/L) regional office in Miami to coordinate the ABF/L business of 22 countries.
- Structured cross-border deals, raised funds to countries, negotiated country risk insurance with ECAs multilaterals, and directly got proper Credit approvals.
- Negotiated regional vendor programs with Scania, John Deere, Caterpillar, Heidelberg, HP, Cisco, IBM and GBM, to boost deals origination.
- Reached a US$1.2 billion regional portfolio, doubling the amount of new business volumes previously generated in the region.
- Assigned back to Brazil in 1997 to manage ABF/L’s biggest exposure; increased volumes and returns, and regained leadership in aircraft cross-border leasing.
