Flooding is a major natural hazard in India that occurs with an unfailing regularity after the monsoon showers. Remote Sensing and GIS based research has gained considerable momentum in the recent decades for studying the spatio-temporal aspects of monsoon floods as it is a need of the time for the flood mitigation and flood hazard management. As microwaves can penetrate through clouds, it is possible to make measurements in all weather conditions. This makes Microwave Remote Sensing technique a complimentary tool to the already existing remote sensing techniques for delineating the spatial and temporal dynamics of the flooded area. This paper demonstrates the potential of microwave radiometry for delineating flood extent over the traditional flood plains of Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers in India and the Indus river system in Pakistan using four years of satellite microwave radiometer data. In this study, the microwave emissivity derived from Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSMI)on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F-13 satellite and Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) satellite observations at 19.35 and 85GHz; at both the vertical and horizontal polarizations are used for deriving the flood index. The land surface emissivity is retrieved from the satellite observations and combining it with the advanced Geographical Information System (GIS) software the extent of the flooded area is derived and it is confirmed with the MODIS derived flood images which are obtained by a combination of Infrared and visible channels. The potential of the method to quantify the flood infested area is brought out. REFERENCES
