1/06-1/07 Part-time research fellow at USC Head & Neck Surgery, Dr. Sinha
Identifying tumor markers for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
9/04-12/05 Ophthalmology Research Fellow: Served as the research fellow/coordinator for the program director and research chair; engaged in various retina studies that involve VEGF inhibitors (Genentech-sponsored study) and an upcoming pilot study for laser photocoagulation for DME; basically, developed clinical research department from stepping stone along with our regulatory coordinator.
Independent Projects
Acular Study for diabetic patients with cataracts: A Prospective 1 Year Study involving 2 cohorts (one cohort receives Predforte and Acular LS 2 weeks prior to cataract surgery and the second cohort receives no treatment prior to cataract surgery): Plan to enroll up to 75 patients and 15 patients (currently enrolled) : Objective is to determine whether anti-inflammatories reduce the incidence of macular edema prior to cataract surgery as opposed to standard therapy of anti-inflammatories S/P cataract surgery)
Adventist Health Study-2: Focused on identifying potential risk factor and/or benefits from the ongoing NIH-sponsored Adventist Health Study-2 (a relatively homogenous population with low incidence of smoking, alcohol intake, and a predominantly vegetarian diet) –investigating lifestyle/nutrition factors in the incidence of chronic diseases (i.e. cardiovascular, cancer, etc.): some preliminary evidence identifying the benefits of certain food groups;
Clinical Studies (NIH-sponsored and industry):
DRCR (Laser/Intravitreal/Peibulbar): NIH-sponsored trials comparing an intravitreal preservative-free steroid versus laser therapy for diabetic macular edema
Phase III trial of Genentech Lucentis for patients with all subtypes of wet AMD (2/3 chance of active treatment versus sham therapy)
Phase II trial Genaera/squalamine: an intravenous agent that inhibits neovascularization via multiple processes through growth signaling, cytoskeleton disruption, and endothelial apoptosis; ophthalmic assessments occur at Loma Linda ophthalmology and drug infusion takes place across at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC)
Regular Clinics & Surgery: Observed surgery and patient care in general clinic, including a number of photodynamic therapy administrations for research patients requiring Verteporfin PDT.
7/03-8/04 Clinical Research Fellow
Solano Clinical Research, Dr. Karl R. Beutner MD PHD
A clinical trials fellowship under the direction of
Karl R. Beutner, MD, Ph.D., Associate Clinical Professor UCSF, and VP and Chief Medical Officer at Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Phase I to Phase III trials and in-depth understanding of guidelines to clinical practice. Dr. Beutner's expertise lies in cutaneous infections, notably cutaneous virology. His research site was one of the first sites to administer imiquimod for the treatment of condyloma acuminata. In the NEJM Nov. '02 issue regarding a controlled trial of HPV16 vaccine, Dr. Beutner was mentioned in the Proof of Principle Investigators. In addition, he is a co-author for the use of Valtrex in the transmission reduction among heterosexual, discordant couples for a NEJM article Jan ’04 article.
7/03-8/04 Clinical Research Fellow
Solano Clinical Research, Dr. Karl. R. Beutner MD PHD
Clinical Studies (not comprehensive list)
1)Phase I Cytomegalovirus vaccine (unique DNA-plasmid method)- a safety and immunogenicity trial in healthy adults (only 2 sites in the nation)
2)Herpes vaccine (a glycoprotein-subunit vaccine) for the prevention of herpes in double, sero-negative women
3)Efficacy of a polyvalent HPV vaccine with an immunogenicity bridge to monovalent HPV16 vaccine - A large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase III multicenter study to evaluate whether the polyvalent vaccine will reduce incidence of cervical cancer, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, and condyloma acuminata.
4)Compare the safety and immunogenicity of a new smallpox vaccine versus the standard Dryvax vaccine - A Phase III, multicenter, randomized study in naïve and previously vaccinated individuals.
5)Safety and Efficacy of "New Chemical Entity" in treatment of External Genital Warts - A multicenter, double-blind, three arm, placebo-controlled Phase III trial.
7/02-7/03 Clinical Research and Wound Healing Fellow
Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Tania Phillips
Clinical Studies Description:
1) A "topical growth factor in subjects with venous ulcers - A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center Phase III study to evaluate the efficacy and safety.
2) Daily cytokine subcutaneous injections in the treatment of psoriasis - A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase III pharmacogenomic study of a recombinant human "cytokine" in patients with active psoriasis.
3) A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness of a cellulose matrix wound dressing for autolytic debridement and healing of chronic venous ulcers.
4) A prospective, multicenter, randomized Phase III trial of a "bioengineered skin equivalent" in patients with venous leg ulcers.
7/02-7/03 Clinical Research Fellow
Boston University Department of Dermatology, Dr. Tania Phillips
I had an excellent opportunity to be involved in a research fellowship under Dr. Phillips at Boston University, Department of Dermatology and Vascular Surgery, whose expertise lies in wound healing. As main fellow of the wound healing clinic, I obtained significant experience in diagnosing and managing a diverse array of leg ulcers from the common diabetic/venous etiology to the unusual causes (RA, SLE, sarcoid, calciphylaxis, sarcoid, etc). Also, I wrote various manuscripts, which have been published.
6/98-8/98 Research Assistant
Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Drs. Cohen and Hardesty
One-third of women with breast implants develop breast capsular hardening due to the development of fibrosis. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the role of antibodies to TNF alpha and IL-1 in the prevention and/or reduction of breast capsular contracture. Basically, my role was to assist in the implantation of miniaturized breast implants into the dorsum of mice and assist with the injection of antibodies or placebo to evaluate the development of capsular fibrosis.
6/93-8/93 Lab Assistant
University of California, San Diego, Dr. Charles Zuker
Studied the role of mechano-transduction in the 2nd antenna segment of the chordotonal organ of Drosophila Melanogaster (fruit fly).
