Visitor Services Intern

Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:

I work on any project in Visitor Services typically related to outreach. This includes, a project developing a plan for permanent interpretive elements like signs, sculptures and brochures to be featured on Canaan Valley NWR's new Freeland Trail Boardwalk. For this project I used Mircrosoft 365, InDesign, and Illustrator. Every month I read, edit and use Adobe suite to design our Refuge Highlights. Each refuge submits three, 100 word stories that relate to our Regional priorities. They submit at least one photo for each story and I edit the stories for writing quality and clarity and compile them into a larger document designed to look like a magazine/ storybook. I transformed the North Atlantic-Appalachian Refuge Law Enforcement Handbook from a single Word document into an online, downloadable, easily accessed Sharepoint Website. I became well-versed in Sharepoint and attended all meetings going forward on the DOI transition from Google to Microsoft 365, informing my coworkers on how to ease the transition. I edited and designed fact sheets for members of congress when they visited refuges, making sure we provide them with the best, up-to-date information on our organization.

I also assisted in the design and production of our regions hunting and fishing brochures and tear sheets. This project includes writing, editing, and map design. These documents will be used to inform visitors of the laws and regulations on the refuge and State-wide.

I edited and designed fact sheets for members of congress when they visited refuges, making sure we provide them with the best, up-to-date information on our organization.

I regularly responded to requests for information specifically from our regional directorate team and headquarters. I gathered data regarding our visitor use, recreation events, and urban wildlife refuge partnerships. Worked with the Silvio O. Conte National Fish & Wildlife Refuge developing outreach events including student field trips, weekend pop-ups and trail walks. I helped lead interpretive programming teaching visitors how to bird watch. Supervisor: Amy Lavoie 413-***-****)

Access Services: Interlibrary Loan and Knowledge

Commons Supervisor Duties, Accomplishments and

Related Skills:

Lead a project to transform the library into a information hub for the campus. This included designing and developing advertisements, using Adobe InDesign and

Illustrator to create fliers, media posts on Facebook and "HampEngage," and reaching out to professors and students by email. I also designed multiple large signs to be hung in the library that designated different spaces for different needs in order to effectively communicate to our visitors where their needs could be met. For this project, I had to stay abreast of all the events and resources available on campus and relay that information to my coworkers so our messages to customers were consistent. This required me to communicate and coordinate with multiple departments. I helped manage and update our blog and website regularly.

Used ILLiad software to process all loan requests from libraries across the country for our materials and requests from our students and faculty for other libraries materials. I packaged books for sending, tracked their progress and communicated to libraries and customers about the location of their books. Hired, trained and supervised a staff of 5 students who monitored our only 24/7 study space. Co-supervised a staff of 20 students who checked in and out and shelved books and answered customer questions. For four hours a week I staffed the "infobar" where students would come for instruction on how to properly conduct research. Supervisor: Suzanne Karanikis 413-***-****)
