Dear whomever it may concern,

My name is Campbell Campbell, and I am applying to be a publicity intern at HarperCollins. I am a rising senior at Columbia University, but I am taking a gap year to pursue a full-time publishing internship and fine-tune my foreign language skills so that I can better edit French and Spanish translation texts. I am thrilled by the opportunity to collaborate on editorial and publicity projects and learn from your staff members.

I am majoring in English and Philosophy with a focus in contemporary American fiction. I have pursued real world applications of these disciplines in the hope that I will cultivate the skills needed for a career in publishing. Beyond taking graduate literature and philosophy courses, I interned and wrote readers reports, editorial letters, and r&r (revise and resubmit) letters for literary fiction, domestic noir, and upmarket women’s fiction manuscripts at the literary agency McIntosh and Otis. I received lessons in and was able to edit subsidiary contracts. I likewise interned at Melville House Publishing where I wrote readers reports for editorial, managed contact lists for publicity, proofread texts and slugged page proof for production, and updated information for vendors’ websites for marketing. I am fortunate enough to have assumed leadership positions and found a creative outlet that allows to me to edit and engage in thoughtful discourse with my peers: I am an editor for the queer and feminist literary magazine Qu(e)ery and a writing consultant for the Columbia University Writing Center. I am eager to pursue subrights techniques in a real world setting, as I hope to learn about a new side of publishing and contribute to selling fiction that showcases new narratorial voices, resists linear time, and plays with the expectations of genres (my favorite genres are narrative nonfiction, upmarket women’s fiction, and literary fiction). I want to work for HarperCollins who lets writers channel their historical and personal selves and who publishes texts by some of my favorite writers Eileen Myles, Rachel Cusk

(Transit), and Angie Thomas. I think that I would be an excellent fit as I pride myself on approaching literature with attention to diversity of narratives and commercial success. And I’d be beyond excited to contribute to social media content and publicity research! Thank you for your time and consideration in reviewing my application, Campbell Campbell
