VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

Volunteer in the Child Life Department (Markham Stouffville Hospital, 2013-2016)

Served as a volunteer in the Pediatric, Neo-natal, and Diagnostic Imaging units of the hospital. I shadowed on-duty pediatricians, and provided children with toys, books, and movies. I assisted them to other areas of the hospital by wheelchair, and by means of other modes of mobility and accessibility accommodation. I directed patients to appropriate units of the hospital, and often accompanied them to their appointments and pre-surgical units (i.e. the OR, waiting room, etc).

Volunteer in the Patient Reception Department (Markham Stouffville Hospital, 2010-2013)

I volunteered in Patient Reception where I served as patient care assistant. I communicated to patients about how to prepare for surgery. I matched their OHIP cards to the corresponding medical records, and provided them with clean linens and robes. In addition, I educated them about self-care, health maintenance, and information regarding the arrangement of future appointments. During my time as patient care assistant volunteer, I learned the importance and value of empathy, compassion, understanding and building connections with patients.
