DSNY - Implementation of the SMART system, New York

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The New York City (City) Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has an initiative that involves replacing DSNY's legacy Sanitation Control and Analysis Network (SCAN) and related ancillary systems with a set of best-of-breed applications or software suites that will be integrated using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach. They identified NTT DATA and awarded a contract to lead the design, development and implementation of the Department's new Sanitation Management Analysis and Resource Tracking system (SMART). SMART will be enterprise-wide in scope and will also help automate many processes that are performed manually today by DSNY staff.

Due to number of factors (for example, the age of existing systems, the retirement of key IT personnel, taking advantage of technical innovations), DSNY has begun a modernization program to improve the timeliness, accuracy and availability of performance data across the organization. Furthermore, DSNY is looking to take advantage of improvements in database and business intelligence technology systems that allow for faster completion of increasingly complicated analyses with less effort than its existing systems.
