EXPERIENCE/PROJECTS
HYBRID ROCKET SENIOR DESIGN August 2019 – May 2020
Designed, manufactured, and tested a G-class hybrid rocket
oDesigned experimental, 3-D printed helical fuel grain
Designed a fuel grain with a helical pattern to increase the total surface area of combustion
Maximum thrust of 265 Newtons, about 20% greater than commercial G-100 motor
oLead design engineer of the engine retainer, fins, and nose cone
Designed engine retainer to withstand 140 N/S2
Developed and assembled 3-D CAD of the entire rocked
Manufactured the nozzle, nose cone, fins, and engine retainer
Verified structural integrity of the rockets body, and engine using ANSYS (FEA)
Calculated coefficient of drag on the fins and nose cone using ANSYS (CFD)
oTeam conflict management
Acted as a liaison between team members who weren’t getting along
Talked a valuable team member out of quitting the project
oTested and Assessed of Rocket Performance
Set up a launch pad with proper ground support equipment
Ignited 2 fuel grains and collected performance data
Data provided total force, regression rate, acceleration, and ISP of rocket
Used data from a static fire to adjust and aid further design
AIRFOIL ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION April 2020
Developed MATLAB code to display takeoff characteristics of an aircraft
oUsed Xfoil, and XFLR5 to design and calculate airfoil/wing properties
Airfoil parameters were set by NACA standards
oWrote a MATLAB script using calculated airfoil parameters
Calculated total lift, drag and power output
Adjustable to different runway lengths and altitude requirements
LAB TESTED FLUID AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES Jan-Dec 2019
Performed a variety of experiments using LabVIEW to record and interpret data
oValidated the Bernoulli principle by measuring pressure from an airstream on a pitot tube
oMeasured drag and plotted streamlines of a custom built vehicle in a wind tunnel
oCalculated the efficiency of a piston heat engine by measuring pressure changes
oMeasured an air flow’s ability to cool a metal rod at different velocities
