To Whom It May Concern:
The purpose of this letter is to communicate my diverse background in medicine, business and education. My experience in medicine has been extremely broad and provided the opportunity of working with all levels of the medical community. My business experience has given me the knowledge to manage large budgets for profitable outcomes. Experience in education has provided the insight necessary to gain cooperation of staff, and assist all team members toward reaching clinical, organizational and personal goals. I have combined the lessons of past experiences and developed a focus commensurate with progressive health care objectives. I believe that health care is constantly inundated with change and requests from consumers and funding sources. For practitioners at all levels to be successful they must have an ever-widening scope of knowledge.
I have over thirty years of service with Mayo Clinic. My service to Mayo has been in many clinical and research areas, working with hundreds of people. Included in my years of service, are various laboratory assignments in a general chemistry environment. Among the research projects with which I have had associations are human research investigations. My primary focus areas directly in the laboratory were in histology and electronmicroscopy. My responsibilities in the various projects involved total responsibility for specimen collection, preparation and resource management. The majority of my professional medical career however, has been in direct health care and most of that as a nurse working in multiple professional capacities. I have had the good fortune to do years of bedside nursing.
Important in my history is a great deal of management, and teaching in settings ranging from long-term care to multiple intensive care settings at Mayo. Education experience over the years has developed a wide range or responsibility and experiences. Of particular interest, will be experience and medical teaching, which I have done concerning psychiatry, infection control, general medical and cardiac care.
I began my career in a Medical ICU, moving after five years to Cardiac Surgical ICU. The combination of these two assignments spanned ten years. During this time, I found myself in every imaginable medical emergency. The knowledge and experiences are more than I could discuss in this brief letter. I would however like to highlight a three of major concepts in learning that occurred during this period of time. First, were the skills of multiple task management in particular during crisis states. Second, was the development of leadership and management skills I acquired as a business owner, Manager, Director of Nursing, as well as other leadership positions throughout my professional career.
During my career there has been a great deal of satisfaction problem solving and leading team members toward a common goal. Third and most important was the exceptional team development that took place during every period of my leadership. A talent that I have always possessed is the ability to develop unity and goal-oriented staff. I take pride in the team development of all persons under my leadership.
A significant amount of my education and personal growth has been focused on the principles of leadership and development of individuals. I am pleased to say that I have had a great deal of success in developing strong functional teams focused on education throughout my professional career. Accomplishing these goals has required me to continue my personal education and to share that education with others.
My years in corporate structures have allowed for the development of a foundation in advanced business principles. This has taught me a great deal about productivity, goal accomplishment and management of people and resources. One of the more important areas I have gained a robust background in is business technical communications. In combination the various experiences of leadership and education have helped me create a strong and effective coaching style.
Over the past ten years I held multiple committee positions; Continuous Improvement, Safety, Team Enhancement, Education and Pro-Act (Crisis Management) development.
In addition, I took a special assignment to develop a telephone-based approach for depressed mental health clients for the Department of Health for the state of Minnesota. My willingness to persistently educate and participate with business and health care initiatives has kept me with current perspectives as well as a wealth of skills and knowledge.
Work in the Psychiatry Department has greatly enhanced my communication skills. I can manage difficult and stressful situations with more ease than is commonly understood. Psychiatry, in concert with my education and experience, has increased the insight I need to be an effective leader, educator and participant within a professional environment.
The most important assets that I have are leadership, communication and integrity, scientific background. Leadership is demonstrated by my ability to hire, train and manage professionals in health care from all levels of medical expertise. Communication is demonstrated by my ability to convey information to various professional individuals and groups both in written and spoken formats. Integrity is best supported by the long-term relationships that have been developed in each professional environment. As a doctor of science with an Epidemiologic focus I am uniquely qualified to work with other medical professionals on the best and safest ways to approach Covid-19 in the education system.
It is my intention to combine my assets of education and experience in health care teaching, bringing my skills to a setting which will promote the best outcome with a maximum potential. The purpose is to participate in a team which works together for a common goal. Understanding and meeting the needs of all stakeholders is a key concept that I always establish as a core standard. My flexibility as a retired medical professional allows the system to gain from years of experience with minimal commitment over time.
I look forward to the possibilities of growth and development of a process promoting best practice principles within a team environment. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely:
David L. Stuve, MA, MSN, RN, PhD
