M.D Resident in Pediatrics, Prof. Puspa Raj Sharma, M.D Pediatrics (HOD) The research entitled, "Measurement of chest circumference: An alternative method to predict low birth weight of term newborns" is the original work carried out for the partial requirement of the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Pediatrics at the Department of Child Health, Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 1, 2006, to April 28, 2007, in 750 term newborns delivered in T.U Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu. The incidence of Low Birth Weight

(LBW)in this study was 15.33%. Chest circumference at birth was found to be highly correlated (p<0.0001) with a birth weight of term newborns. Linear regression analysis showed chest circumference of 28.5 cm as the best cutoff value to predict LBW. At this cut off value, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy were found to be 95.7%, 92.8%, 70.5%, 99.2%, and 93.2% respectively.
