Magneto-hydrodynamic Study of A Gridded Ion Thruster Jan’20 – May ‘20
- Goals:
o To carry out simulations of flow through the cathode and discharge chamber of the propulsion system under multiple conditions to validate the preliminary design.
- Methodology:
o Thermal Simulation of the interior environment of the hollow cathode. o Magneto-hydrodynamics study and simulation of the plasma behavior inside the cathode assembly.
- Outcomes:
o Design Optimization for suitable geometry selection for the CubeSat Propulsion System. o Development of a novel advanced propulsion system with better efficiency and feasibility. CURRICULUM VITAE
UNDERGRADUATE PROJECT
1. Self-induced Fire Propagation in an Array of Heat Sources Jan’19 – May ‘19
- Goals:
o To study the behavioral phenomena of opposed fire o To formulate fire propagation principles
o To come up with an algorithm to predict control time and fire spread
- Methodology:
o Simple experimental setup with matchsticks arranged in different orientation according to the variation in the deciding parameters.
o Image processing and plotting of graphs in TecPlot o Analysis of statistical and graphical data to match the goals.
- Outcomes:
o Fire propagation principles are obtained.
o The critical fire spread factor is determined and regimes for varying configurations are stated. 2. Designing of an Articulated On-board CubeSat Propulsion System Jul’19 – Nov’19
- Goals:
o To design an independent propulsive unit to power cubesats
- Methodology:
o Theoretical research on plasma dynamics and existing electric propulsion systems. o 3D Modeling of conceptual design in Fusion 360
- Outcomes:
o Preliminary on-board propulsion system is designed and feasibility is tested. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I. Rover Challenge – JVP India Cup 2017 Aug’17 – Oct’17 Designed and modelled a real size prototype of a human powered rover / moon buggy and won the Best Design Award at the national level.
II. NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge 2018 Dec’17 – Apr’18 As the Mechanical Lead for the SRM Explorover team, represented India as a participant in the global platform in this competition which was held in NASA Davidson and Marshall Space Center, Huntsville, Alabama, USA and competed with the developed model of the Exploration Rover. III. ASTRA 2019 – SATELLITE DESIGN HACK-A-THON Mar’19 Took part in India’s first Satellite Design Hack-a-thon organized by SEDS India. Team Azure was awarded the Best Application Based Presentation Award for the proposal of Laser Induced Therm-ionic Electron Emission for CubeSat Propulsion.
IV. ELEKTRA [Tech Fest, SRM-IST] Mar ‘19
Presented the working model of a Bluetooth Controlled Robotic Arm which was designed in Solidworks and was 3D printed. The coding was performed in the Arduino Uno Software. CONFERENCES:
• Attended the LIFE IN SPACE – International Capsule Workshop held at the Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai which was conducted by IARC in collaboration with NASCA on 22nd March 2018.
• Attended Astronomical Society of India’s (ASI) 2019 Annual Meeting and Conference held at Christ University, Bengaluru on 18th – 22nd February 2019.
• The proposal on “Laser Induced Therm-ionic Electron Emission for CubeSat Propulsion” got accepted and was presented at the 8th Interplanetary CubeSat Workshop and Conference 2019, Milan, Italy and it was also selected for the Mech-Aero 2019 conference, San Francisco, USA.
• The abstract on “Designing of an articulated on-board CubeSat propulsion system” got accepted for the IEEE Aerospace Conference 2020 and AIAA Propulsion & Energy Symposium 2020. CURRICULUM VITAE
• The minor project on “Self-Induced Fire Propagation in an Array of Heat Sources” was accepted and presented at the esteemed 70th International Aerospace Congress 2019 organized by IAF-AIAA in Washington DC for an interactive poster session.
• Attended the International Human Spaceflight Symposium organized by ISRO and ASI in collaboration with IAA in January 2020.
• Presented a paper on “Self-inducing Fires: The Heat Source Effect” at the International Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering – ICAME 2020 held in SRM-IST, Chennai and it was published at the IOP Journal as well.
