Shaft design calculations are performed for a gear box which is used in a power tiller. The gear box mounted on the power tiller chassis which delivers power to the rotovator and wheel drive. For hand calculation, the shaft was considered as an equivalent 1-D beam to calculate the various forces like engage forces, weight of gears and torsional forces. Based on this shear force and bending moment diagrams, the deflection and the stresses were calculated. For design validation, the shear force and bending moment were calculated in ANSYS. 3D analysis was performed on various shafts to identify the critical regions. Based on the analysis and hand calculation, the design was found to be safe. Tool Used: Solid works 2014 and ANSYS Workbench 14.0 Team size: 2 2. Failure analysis and design modification of a rotavator drive shaft Static failure was absorbed in a rotavator drive shaft of a power tiller machine used in harvesting. To validate the failure, analysis was performed in ANSYS by applying various loads such as impact load due to tilling and the torque from the gear box. The critical regions identified in ANSYS were matching well with the actual failure. Design modification was performed by changing the orientation of the tilling rotor to avoid failure. Further, Analysis was performed using ANSYS to validate the new design. The stresses observed in the critical region were within the allowable design limits. New prototype is now fabricated and running without any failure.
Tool Used: Solid works 2014 and ANSYS Workbench 14.0 Team size: 2 3. Hand calculation and static analysis of crank assembly. Hand calculation was performed to calculate various forces like inertia force, gas pressure, piston force, thrust on crank shaft bearing. Bending moment calculations are also calculated for the given specification. For design validation, static analysis was performed in ANSYS. Based on the analysis, the critical regions were identified. The bending stress values from the simulation matches with the calculated bending stress value.
