“Production of Biodiesel from Pongamia oil using Fluorspar as a catalyst and optimization of esterification and transesterification processes using Response surface methodology (RSM)” Guide: Dr. N. Ananthraman
Pongamia oil is used for biodiesel production using a novel catalyst that is naturally occurring mineral Flourspar. Complete characterization of the catalyst confirms that it turned out to be a good catalyst for the production of biodiesel. The pre-treatment process and the trans-esterification process is optimized using RSM. The predicted outputs are compared and respective error % is calculated and the mean square value is assimilated. “Modelling of Biodiesel Production from Pongamia oil using Artificial neural network (ANN) and Engine test”

Fluorspar is a naturally occurring mineral, which is used as a catalyst for the Biodiesel production from Pongamia oil which resulted in a decent conversion of 91.2% with 15:1 Methanol: esterified oil ratio, 8wt% catalyst loading and 3 hours of transesterification time. The modelling of transesterification process is done using Artificial Neural Networks(ANN) and the predicted outputs are compared and the error is also calculated. GC-MS analysis Biodiesel helped in finding its composition. The characterization of biodiesel is also done by 1 H-NMR analysis. FTIR analysis of catalyst helps in identifying the impurities present and it is confirmed using XRD analysis of the same. Morphological structure is identified SEM images. The Characterization of the Biodiesel is done using NMR and GC-MS analysis. Emission and performance characteristics of produced biodiesel are studied using a 4-stroke single cylinder IC diesel engine.

The project was carried out to design a distillation column to separate a binary mixture of Mono Ethylene Glycol and Di Ethylene Glycol using McCabe Thiele’s procedure. It determines the number of trays required for the desired degree of 95% purity. A number of analytical equations, such as the Antoine equation were used.
