Professional Profile:
Engineering/SQEH
For eighteen years, I worked in the AWE Metallic Materials Department as part of a Project management team managing the development of assembly techniques (fabrication, joining) for the manufacture of strategic weapon system components and in-service support for the strategic deterrent. Project work included the management of a five-person development team taking Physicist concepts through to small scale manufacture of trial sub-assemblies within various AWE production units.
My projects included destructive (tensile, pressure testing and stress analysis) and non-destructive analysis (radiographic, ultrasonic), validation (metrics against specification) and reporting. My project work progressed into facility management where I worked for several years as an Assurance Manager focusing on the management and improvement of safety, quality, environment, health and security issues in two manufacturing groups at AWE.
My initial quality and environment efforts centred on the implementation and accreditation to the ISO 9000:2000 series and ISO 14001. Configuration management featured throughout this assurance function.
Review has formed an integral part of both my development and assurance functions with appropriate internal and external lead audit training undertaken. Review activities in the nuclear sector included substantiation of the Case for Continued Operation (Authority to Operate (ATO) renewal) in other AWE departments as part of the nuclear site licence conditions. Accident investigation and reporting have formed a key element of the assurance function.
At Harwell my roles in a high category PIE (nuclear legacy processing) and Waste processing facilities centred on ATO renewal, regulatory implementation, review / audit, contingency arrangements, presentation / training and operational safety.
With Lloyds my focus was on monitoring of Quality and Health & Safety as a Lead Assessor (ISO9001/OHSAS18001) in the nuclear engineering and oil/gas industries. This in turn led me to a temporary role as a Project Quality Engineer.
Currently my position as a Quality, Health, Safety and Environment Manager in the precious metal recovery and hazardous waste processing industry has centred on the continual improvement of our ISO9001, OHSAS18001 and 14001 quality, safety and environment management systems and our transition to ISO45001.

Tetronics Int. Ltd Swindon
December 2015 to present day….
As the Quality, Health, Safety & Environment Manager in the resource recovery industry my focus has been on the regeneration of the assurance process for the effective delivery of products to our clients. I have developed a hierarchy of systems to capture data that through analysis have introduced continual improvement in two elements of a corporate group of companies. Monitoring, assessment, measurement and record management have all been essential elements to this continuing process.
Nuvia Ltd Harwell
February 2015 to August 2015
As a Project Quality Engineer, my work involved supporting project and tendering teams in the application of quality throughout project delivery. My work focused on support of projects for ITER F4E (Fusion for Energy) and Rolls Royce Core Production Capability. As part of business development my skills were employed to improve delivery both within the company and the supply chain.
LRQA Coventry
April 2013 to February 2015
As a Lead Assessor, I undertook certification assessments to ISO9001:2008 & OHSAS18001:2007 of clients in the nuclear, defence, consulting, engineering, oil/gas/chemical and food industries. Certification assessments included detailed review of the business management systems to identify objective evidence of compliance against the international standard. My reviews highlighted positive aspects along with improvement opportunities.
Security ISO28000 – I underwent conversion training for supply chain security in relation to the safe delivery of products and the global threat from piracy.
RSRL Harwell
Didcot, Oxford.
February 2003 to April 2013.
As a Safety Advisor in Assurance of the Industrial Safety group my work was split between the central team and the Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant (LETP). My roles varied from development of corporate management systems, ATO renewal to meet site safety and nuclear licence conditions (ONR), auditing, emergency exercises, training and operational safety in nuclear waste plants. Inter-department review activities have included an awareness of reactor design along with biological shielding and containment.
In Safety Support in the Nuclear Facilities Department I was responsible for the Annual Review of Safety / ATO renewal or Self Assessment Review (SAR), auditing, emergency exercise training & operational safety in a Post Irradiation Experiment (PIE) facility. Experience with Baseline studies, Environmental Aspects Review, BAT, nuclear materials accountancy and remote handling of radioactive sources within hot cells. Decommissioning activities have led to involvement in the Post Operative Clean Out and demolition of ‘hot cells’ necessitating the development of complex documentation (SSoW) encompassing Health Physics dosimetry, radiological surveys and task-based Dose Restraint Objectives.
