Preceptor: Kirk Brown PA-C

Detail: Emergency medicine rotation where I saw patients independently and reported to my preceptor. I was able to obtain excellent experience with extremity splinting, critical care, suturing intubations, code strokes, code MI, code sepsis, IV/Central line placements, and many others.

Primary Care – Memorial Health University Family Medicine Center

Preceptor: Allison Andrews PA-C

Detail: I independently saw all of my preceptor’s patients and reported them to her every day for this rotation. We saw on average 15-30 patients a day for primary care based management. We also performed some procedures like birth control device implantation, cerumen impaction removal, and fluorescein eye staining.

Women’s Health – Memorial Health University Family Medicine Center

Preceptor: Dr. Elliot Cowart and family medicine residents

Detail: I saw patients by myself and reported them to the medical residents/attending physicians I was placed with that day in clinic. This experience was a mixture of primary care and womens health medicine at a teaching institution. I also attended 2 lectures a day with other medical students and grand rounds every Friday. I had a day full of only gynecologic procedures such as colposcopy, pap smears, and cervical biopsy with staining. I had the additional opportunity to participate in their people experiencing homelessness medicine program 2 days of the rotation.

Orthopedic Surgery – Optim Orthopedics and East Georgia Regional Medical Center

Preceptor: Madonna Henry PA-C and Dr. Don Aaron

Detail: My elective rotation in orthopedic surgery was an excellent rotation full of orthopedic surgery, outpatient clinic, inpatient medicine, and athletic sports medicine. I gained lots of experience with joint injections, casting, splitting, closed reductions, and rehabilitation in the clinic. In the operating room we did many procedures with a focus on the shoulder, knee, elbow, fingers, and hand.

Detail: On this rotation I saw patients independently in clinic while reporting to my preceptor after each patient. We saw an even mix of problem based acute care and well child checks during this rotation. I obtained exposure to administration of vaccinations, child dental care, pulmonary spirometer monitoring, and others.

General Surgery – Liberty Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph’s/Candler

Preceptor: Dr. Christina McCain and Dr. Rebecca Coefield-Floyd

Detail: General surgery rotation at a busy 133 bed hospital. I was able to first assistant on almost every surgery and procedure. Saw general surgery clinic patients by myself and reported to my preceptor. I was able to see 50+ colonoscopy procedures alone. Some other procedures include cholecystectomy, appendectomy, abdominal hernia repair, lipoma removal, extensive wound care, wound debridement, hemorrhoid ligation, anal fissure repair, and many others. I also participated in their wound care clinic once a week debriding wounds and applying bandaging.

Internal Medicine – Memorial Health University Hospital Medical Center

Preceptor: Dr. Tim Connelly, Dr. Mary Downing, Dr. Hannah, and Internal Residents

Detail: This rotation was completely inpatient medicine with a strong emphasis on teaching by attending 2 structured lectures a day at a minimum with grand rounds every Friday. We were placed on inpatient teams with 1 attending, 2 residents, 0-2 medical students, and 1 PA student. I would pick 1-4 patients on our list to see and report back to the residents my findings. I learned a lot about interdisciplinary communication and management of increasingly complex medical conditions.

Behavioral Medicine – Gateway and Lakeside Adolescent Crisis Stabilization Unit

Preceptor: Dr. Chrissie Clure and Nicole Whitis PA-C

Detail: This rotation was a mixture of a state operated inpatient pediatric crisis stabilization unit and an outpatient-counseling clinic. After an acute traumatic event the children would either be directly transported to us or would be seen at the hospital before being sent to our facility. This rotation gave me well-rounded experience with inpatient and outpatient psychiatry. I was given the opportunity to do patient interviews, medication management, therapeutic listening, and other treatment modalities.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

South University requires students to become proficient in certain skills in order to graduate. Skills I have become proficient in include, but are not limited to sterile technique, surgical scrub/donning surgical personal protective equipment, laparoscopic camera operation, surgical first assist, incision and drainage of abscess or cyst, local anesthesia (Topical, field block, and digital block), suturing (running, interrupted, subcuticular, mattress, and etc), application of dermabond, suture and stable removal, joint injection and aspiration, splinting, staging of decubitus ulcers, obtain wound cultures, interpret culture and sensitivity results, wound dressing, diabetic foot exam, finger stick blood glucose, venipuncture, IV placement, Interpret arterial blood gases, injections (intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular), corneal abrasion assessment with fluorescein stain, removal of cerumen, interpret electrocardiogram, interpret chest radiograph, urinary bladder catheterization, interpret dipstick urinalysis with and without microscopy, breast exam, pelvic exam with pap smear, Interpretation of pap smear results, digital rectal exam, perform and interpret hemoccult test.
