Surgical Mask
Used to enter the room for a patient on Droplet Precautions
Used for procedures and patient care activities that are likely to generate splashes or sprays of blood or bodily fluid
Use when caring for COVID confirmed patients or PUI
N95 Respirator Mask
Used for patients on Airborne Precautions (e.g. TB, Measles)
Used for COVID confirmed patients or PUI during aerosol-generating procedures
Should be removed upon exiting from the patient room
Can be reused after doffing
Can remain in use until it becomes damp, damaged, visibly soiled, or hard to breathe through
Must be disposed of at the end of your shift
Must be disposed of at the end of the shift when used for patients on Airborne Precautions
Must be disposed of after all aerosol-generating procedure
Isolation Gown (Disposal)
Should be used when contact with blood or bodily fluid is anticipated
Used for the following high-contact patient care activities for patients on Contact Precautions: dressing, bathing/showering, transferring, providing hygiene, changing linens, changing briefs or assisting with toileting, device care or use, & wound care
Used when caring for COVID confirmed patients or PUI
Cannot be reused after doffing
Face shield and Goggles
Use if splashing or spraying of blood, body fluids, secretions, or excretions may be generated & eye & nose contamination can be reasonable anticipated
Used when caring for COVID confirmed patients or PUI
Can remain in place & do not need to be changed between rooms (when required, e.g. caring for more than one PUI)
Can be reused after doffing
Can be stored for reuse for multiple shifts by the same person until they become damaged
GUIDELINES FOR DOFFING PPE FOR REUSE
1.Remove isolation gown and gloves and place in regular trash
2.Perform hand hygiene and don a clean pair of gloves
3.Remove goggles by grasping the frames near your ears or face shield by the strap at the back of your head taking care not to touch the external surface of your face and eyes
4.Next wipe the outside of the face shield or goggles using an alcohol pad or germicidal wipe
5.Place the goggles or face shield with the external side down in an emesis basin, paper bag, or on a clean chux (labeled with your name), on a table outside of the patient room or in the ante room (if available)
6.Perform hand hygiene over gloves before removing the mask
7.Untie the mask or remove by grasping the elastic straps or ear loops being careful not to touch the front of the mask
8.Using the ties, elastic straps or ear loops, place the mask with the external side down into an emesis basin, paper bag or on a chux making sure the elastic or ties do not touch the external side of the mask
9.Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene
GUIDELINES FOR DONNING REUSED PPE
1.Perform hand hygiene
2.Don a clean isolation gown and a clean pair of gloves
3.Grab the facemask or N95 respirator mask by the ties, elastic straps, or ear loops and place over your mouth and nose, adjust the mask as needed (or perform seal check) being careful not to touch your face or eyes
4.Perform hand hygiene over gloves before grabbing the goggles
5.Grab the goggles by the earpiece frame, or the face shield by the head strap and place on your face
6.Perform hand hygiene over gloves before entering the room
