Sister to Sister Mentorship Program Hampton, VA

Mentor/Volunteer August 2017- August 2018

Sister to Sister program is a non-profit organization that links women, girls, and families globally, to the resources that connect, advance, and strengthen them. I joined at the Hampton University location. I volunteered on campus and around the community and it gave me my first mentor opportunity. I was able to tutor children during afterschool hours and help them improve academically and socially in school. Although the program had some organizational challenges, I managed to overcome these issues by recommending better ways to communicate and keeping the team on task. During meetings, I presented how working as a team will benefit our children’s needs and our service skills.

G.I.R.L.S Club Mentorship Program Hampton, VA

Mentor August 2018 - August 2019

G.I.R.L.S Club stands for Girls Influenced by Righteous Living in all Situations. It targets young girls residing in the Newport News/Hampton community. It is a mentoring program for middle school and high school girls. The program assigned a 7th grader and a 10th grader for me to mentor for the 2018-2019 school year. We discussed crucial issues that the girls undergo; ultimately, I created a safe space to express our emotions. Not only have I assisted them on improving their language and writing skills, but also, we have come across essential life teaching topics such as peer pressure, conflict management, racial insensitivity, human trafficking awareness, and more. I conducted presentations and seminars incorporating many visual aids and interaction opportunities, so they can absorb the importance of the information they were receiving. Overall, it was an awarding experience and it demonstrated the significance of my role as a mentor. It was perplexing to be able to help these young ladies see their potential and discovering my own influence.
