PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Quality Assurance Engineer / R & D LED lighting
Valuelight May 2013 – June 2015
Valuelight produces fluorescent and LED energy efficient lights for commercial and outdoor use.
This is a many hats position involving: Quality control. RMA’s
Development testing and safety qualification of new lighting LED units.. UL / CSA / Design Lights Consortium.
Design modification of "off shelf" units ( Mechanical using AutoCAD, Optical modification and electronic drivers.)
Customer liaison and problem solving. Use of Lighting software for determination lighting requirements
OPTO-MECHANICAL TEST TECHNICIAN
Xiris Automation Corp. 2009 – 2010
Optical set-up and testing for machine vision applications utilising high speed digital cameras. R & D for applications in label inspection, label positioning ( Bottles), defect detection ( Optical disks, Solar panels), Pre and post tube welding inspection (Laser line system). Designed and produced many mounts. Gained considerable experience on a milling machine.
OPTICAL TEST & DESIGN TECHNICIAN
Northrop Grumman, Toronto, ON 2001 – 2004
Produced a prototype LED backlight array with even Intensity and Chromaticity. Each colour LED having a different voltage and current drive versus Luminance
Renewed outdated LED display. Duplicated Chromaticity and Luminance output of old LED displays to meet Mil Specs
Actively involved in F18 display pre-production testing automation, wrote procedures, oversaw ‘first off’ testing, provided initial QA for processing specs prior to full production.
Tested new backlights and displays with AR and ITO coatings, with an emphasis on reflectivity verses viewing angle

OPTO-MECHANICAL DESIGN TECHNICIAN
Efos Inc., Mississauga, ON 1991 – 2000
Designed optics for Ultracure and Novacure. Increased output through 5mm diameter light guide on previous 100SS system from 2 Wcm-2 to 11.5 Wcm-2
Reverse engineered 100W Hg lamp, improved focusing output through 5mm diameter light guide. Potted new mercury ARC lamps into used Osram reflectors, elevating the average lamp output and lengthening the life producing the following impressive results:
Average Output
Standard Deviation
Hours to 50% decrease in output
Previous Lamp
11.5 Wcm-2
1.0 Wcm-2
200 hours
New Lamp
13.3 Wcm-2
0.15 Wcm-2
600 hours
Conducted research into potential reflective coating with the following findings:
Reflectivity Specification
Notes
Previous Lamp
85% @ 365nm
Estimated to be > 30% @ 250nm
New Lamp
93% average 250 – 390 nm
Minimum 85% @ 250 nm
Designed feedback system for Novacure keeping intensity within –10% of required setting recognised as a competitive figure. Designed beam splitter and detector, which gave an accurate reading of light output controlled by a movable iris
Developed and tested phototherapy light sources including quartz halogen lamps, 1200 watts, 150 watts with delivery down large light guides for external body use. For the treatment of various internal cancers Xenon lamps were the light source with small diameter fibres
Conceived various radiometers, calibrated scanning radiometers to NIST standards
Led numerous minor projects from LED arrays to microwave excited light sources.
INSTRUMENTS
Utilized the following optical instruments:
Oscilloscopes
Multimeters
Wave Generators
Interferometers
Lock-in-Amplifiers
Spectrum Analyzers
Polar scopes
Lasers
Fiber Optics
Photo-detectors
Scanning Radiometers
Refract meters
