A relatively brief description of the problem or concern the client has will be obtained, including the referral source, nature of the problem, duration, symptoms, previous therapy, etc. This also involves determining the client’s goals, and eliciting their understanding of how counselling could help him/her achieve this.

To refer out callers whose needs we are unable to meet due to the nature or complexity of the problem, and provide them with a referral to a more appropriate service provider
