Professional Experience

Common Spirit Health, Phoenix, Arizona - June 2012 – Present

Area IT Director - St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center, Barrow Neurological Institute, University of Arizona Cancer Center, and Dignity Health Medical Group

Direct the IT strategy and operations for these facilities, and have ultimate responsibility for St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center, Barrow Neurological Institute, U of A Cancer Center, Arizona General Hospital Laveen, with 14 free standing EDs, Arizona Care Network, and the Dignity Health Medical Group with 40 plus clinics across Arizona for Common Spirit Health. This involves the direction of the IT functions in support of our approximately 6,000 employees located in various campuses. I’m a member of the hospital’s executive leadership team working as the CIO of all these facilities. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is one of the largest hospitals in the southwest, and Barrow Neurological Institute is world renowned in its specialty. My primary focus is to drive IT for the organization to help meet our business objectives, while at the same time creating a positive patient and customer experience, and doing all this within budget. I oversee all aspects of IT including but not limited to service delivery, security, change management, project management, procurement, budgeting, vendor management, and contracting issues.

Conversion of EHR systems to Cerner – Almost all clinical aspects of the hospital run through our EHR systems. We converted from Emtek to Cerner which was a huge effort spanning a year and half of planning and execution. The hospital went live on schedule, within budget, and with relatively few issues for a hospital of our size. Also converted from Allscripts to Cerner at all of our clinics in the Dignity Health Medical Group, which also went very well.

Oversight for all IT aspects of building out two new facilities including our new St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center, which is a strategic business initiative with it being a small 12 bed hospital. Our second is again a strategic growth initiative with our St. Joseph’s Cancer Center a 220,000 sqft facility. Also direct the IT side of bringing on new clinics on a monthly basis as we grow our Dignity Health Medical Group.

Built out the current IT governance structure for the organization, so that all IT initiatives have been fully vetted by our executive leadership team through our IT Steering Committee before execution.

Helped to integrate our joint venture Arizona General facilities into Common Spirit Health after we purchased the organization’s presence in Arizona.

Talent Acquisition and Growth – Great success in building talent within my organization to help them prepare for future positions within the organization, and helping them to get to their career goals. I’ve recommended two of my employees for my position in other hospitals, and both have moved on to my equivalent role in other hospitals.

Awarded the Values in Action Award which is given annually to an employee that was nominated by their peers at each of the facilities as someone that exemplifies Common Spirit Health’s core values of Dignity, Collaboration, Justice, Stewardship, and Excellence.

Process Improvement – As the IT leader for the largest hospital in the organization, I’m continually asked to offer my insights and input into how to align the centralized IT organization with the hospital’s direction, and also how to get the hospital to align with our centralized direction. Using LEAN methodologies along with the ITIL set of best practices, I am consistently chosen to lead, and participate in key groups focused on improving processes for the enterprise. Ranging from capital planning, to Help Desk improvements, to Project Management process improvements, to the review of key security policies, to a revamp of our IT Orientation and Training program.

Dignity Health, Phoenix, Arizona - December 2008 – December 2012

IT Director, Data Security Officer - Phoenix Corporate Offices

This is similar to the role I have now, yet for our Phoenix Corporate Offices for Dignity Health, and provided direction for the enterprise. This involved the management of the IT functions in support of our approximately 1,500 employees located in the corporate offices. Key customers include the administrative functions like Contracting, Risk, Payroll, AP, AR, Finance, HR, Supply Chain, Legal, Real Estate, and the Patient Financial Services Group that bills and collects over $1.5 billion dollars in revenue annually. Was asked to take on a much larger role as the Area IT Director for Dignity Health’s flagship hospital, and associated facilities.

SunCor Development, Tempe, Arizona - April 2005 – December 2008

IT Manager

Managed all aspects of the IT at SunCor working as a member of the executive team. Helped to increase service levels with the IT Department while keeping within budget during increasingly difficult years for the home building market. Also had a hands-on role as the Web Development Lead and Database Administrator to help develop key tools for the organization to integrate with our ERP system (Newstar), Sales Profiler, Counterpoint, and other databases. Started as the Database Manger, and was quickly promoted to IT Manager for all of SunCor. As the housing market began to deteriorate, I found the opportunity to move to an IT Director position at Dignity Health.

Acxiom, Phoenix, Arizona - July 2003 – April 2005

Solutions Developer

Technical Lead developing web pages using Java and HTML in Eclipse utilizing Tomcat for our production website. Accessing and writing data to and from both Oracle and SQL Server databases. Also did some complex Perl scripting in a Unix environment extracting data from our Oracle database. Expert in SQL for both SQL Server and Oracle databases. Also wrote code on our IBM Mainframe, programming in Assembler, processing data for credit card client. Winner of the Acxiom Eight award, given to one employee every quarter, for exemplifying the eight core Acxiom qualities. After getting my MBA I wanted to get into management, that opportunity wasn’t available at Acxiom, so I found the management role at SunCor

EDS, Phoenix, Arizona - June 1996 – July 2003

Information Analyst / Lead Operator / Operator

Moved from an operator doing computer hardware support, to lead operator in 6 months, to a programmer in 2 years. Worked on an IBM Mainframe, maintaining our front-end processing of financial data for Credit Unions all over the US. Programmed in Cobol, Assembler, made JCL changes, and involved with support. Managed the nightly cycle of jobs, which included file verification and abend resolution using CA-7, CA-1, and File-Aid. Monitored the test cycles that ran daily to prevent the same issues from arising in the production cycles. Wanted an opportunity to grow, that opportunity wasn’t available at EDS at the time, so I found the job at Acxiom.
