Personal Statement
I studied for my Master’s in Human Resource Management at the University of Hertfordshire. My experience at Hertfordshire did not only impact in me the required knowledge, but also it gave me the avenue to practice and improve some of my skills. For instance, my communication skills. During my study, I was given the opportunity to take part in individual and group (graded) presentations. This improved my communication skills and as well enhanced my ability to function well as part of a team. I can blend in an unfamiliar environment and fit right in as I relocated to the UK with no prior knowledge of how things were done, and I was able to function exceptionally, in terms of my grades and getting a job. During my study, I worked part-time at Tesco as a customer assistant where I communicated with customers. My ability to cope with studying and working at the same time shows that I am highly organised, ambitious and an excellent multi-tasker.
I participated in the University of Hertfordshire (UH) connect book reading experience. Connect is a University-wide initiative for students. Students and staff read the same book and participate on discussions, activities and events that relates to the theme of the book. The connect programme provided me an opportunity to get to know other students across the University (and diverse cultures) and share in a learning experience. The programme also gave me an opportunity to use my communication skills. For instance, I participated in an essay writing competition, which won me an all-expense paid trip to New York. My essay was one of the best three and I was given an opportunity to back up my essay with a presentation. The presentation gave me an avenue to display my skill in the use of Excel and PowerPoint. I am currently an Associate member of the CIPD which gives me access to a variety of resources and keeps me updated with recent employment laws.
I relocated back to Nigeria with little experience in HR and I have since improved and developed in my experience in HR specifically: Recruitment, employment relations, leadership and Development, Performance Management, strategic HRM, Business Development and Remuneration. I am looking to further expand my knowledge and experience in HR. I have in addition currently applied to be a member of the CIPM. Some of the modules I studied during my Masters are:
