Scansystems Inc., Mechanical Engineer 2003- 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMnAV4CKe-M

Engineering and Renovation of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Equipment:

Analyzing existing parts and reproducing original manufacturing design drawings, developing them into assembly drawings. Creating general arrangement drawings of whole machines, such as magnetic flux leakage and eddy currency and hall Sensors machines, etc.

Renovating and redesigning old and retired machines, increasing efficiency and productivity while reducing cost, and develop them into new products for the company. For example, EMI Inspection Equipment: DT-2100™ (~$20 million price tag) and DT-3100™ (~$25 million) M-series Digi-Tech™ MFL Pipe Inspection Unit is a four-function OCTG inspection system that includes a longitudinal, transverse, wall monitoring and grade comparator.

designed these machines and added the following improvements:

1Replacing pinch roller linkage bronze bushing to special plastic bushing resulting in modified pinch roller usage life spend from 1~2 years to 5~8 years

2Adding the balance disk on the rotating head assembly, rearranging and carefully balancing each components increase its linear speed from old ~100 FPM to ~250 FPM and ~120 RPM to ~350 RPM, plus better running performance.

3Adding the 4 vibration damping mechanism inside the substructure, reducing the rotating head running run-out from old 0.062” to under 0.016”.

4Designed and patented a new special parallel mechanism to keep the sensor shoe from touching the inspected pipe (Patent US73972238B2).

New products Development:

Completed equipments from prototype to fully automated batch production equipments, including conceptual design, feasibility Study, general arrangement, detail assembly and unit design, (GD&T) tolerance stack-up study, tight tolerance component design; quality systems, design for automation, practices, and principles in an ISO 9000 environment implementation, such as ECR and NCR, etc.

Developed new products for sale and new tools for manufacturing, such as:

Model-2 Conveyor - Creatively designed the pipe double load-in and double load-out special conveyer mechanism powered by the hydraulic cylinder and controlled by the sensors, encoders and vision systems so as to form a fully automatically pipe flow line. Experienced with motion control by vision and sensor systems, pneumatics and hydraulic systems, layout and details. Selected and layout the hydraulic pump, valve, piping and system schematics.

PITCO Horizontal Slip Ring - Replaced the purchased vertical slip ring. Shoe Arm mechanism driven by Pneumatics, designed the pneumatic system schematic diagram.

Designed the inspection CNC device to check soldering quality of electronic printed circuit board of hall and wall sensor shoe for the EMI Inspection Equipment, selecting step motors and two axial linear motion plus one axial rotational motion method. Application and knowledge of wireless sensors and devises in rotating equipment.

Designed the support brackets, boxes, and cases for each machine’s electronic, HMI, PLC and Automation devices

National Oilwell--Houston, Texas, Senior Mechanical Engineer 2001 –2003

Work on second HORIZONTAL BUCKING MACHINE UNIT on GlobalSantaFe Jackup Rig 183, $1.0 million project.

Independently re-designed and modified the second BUCKING UNIT machine, developed general arrangement and Assembly and sub-assembly drawings with bill of material (BOM). Structural stress analysis and calculation. Supervised and checked the draftsmen detail machine component, formed sheet metal and weldment drawings for shop fabrication. Modified hydraulic system. Shop construction and test supervision and coordination.

Work on DEVON ENERGY CHINA project in CHINA

Developed study drawings for two offshore drilling rigs of DEVON ENERGY CHINA project. Corrected, re-designed and re-layouted the skidding system. Checked and corrected the structure drawings. Designed the mouse hole and BOP test skid, etc.
