Job Status: Quality Engineer June 2002 to Nov 2003 (Contract)

I am required to check parts and components as part of the PPAP process using Mitutoyo CMM.

I carried out capability studies on the machining process, in order to find out which machine would be able to produce components to their customer-drawing requirement. Used Profile equipment to check the shape, and contour of the parts and roundness equipment to check concentric and roundness, as well as surface finish. If the components did not reach the satisfied requirements, I would provide the company with ways to find solutions

London Underground Limited February 02 to April 02 (Contract)

Job Status: Quality Inspector/Supervisor

I was 1 of 12 Inspectors contracted by London Underground following the recent Central Line problem. I Inspected machined components bought in for derailment problems, used metrology equipment (thread gauges, height gauges (Trimos), gap gauges, Vernier and depth Vernier) and also programmed and used the CMM Mitutoyo (cosmos) machines.

Part of my job requirement was to liaise with other inspectors who had accrued problems throughout their shifts. Liaise with suppliers and resolve any problems with components that were delivered. Keep track of rejects that were sent back and re-submitted from suppliers. Attending weekly meetings with the manager to discuss process issues and any problems, which had accrued throughout the week?

Job Status: Quality Inspector

I was required to measure Plastic water meter components, which were produced by CNC machines making sure, they are correct. Using Metrology equipment plug gauges, ring gauges, verinier etc, recording the results and using them to produce SPC charts to compare the performance of the CNC machines.

I also monitored the machines, making sure that each sample taken of the machines was correct i.e. distortion or cutting error. To check the cutting error I used metrology equipment, when I found such problems I informed the setters so they could make adjustments to correct the problem.

Freelance work-Inspecting BMW Camshaft (Agency) March 2001 – October 2001

Conducted Physical inspection tests on crankshafts

Ford Motor Co, Dagenham September 1989 to March 2001

Job Status: Engineer (Zeiss Programmer)

I did an apprenticeship for the first four years at Ford’s. The first two were at Ford’s Training Centre, where I learnt the basics of engineering. The other two years were spent in a production environment at the Ford Dagenham Body and Assembly Plant doing jigs and fixtures and tool making.

Dimension and confirm all aspects of any 3D object of a vehicle, to an exact specification and minimum tolerance.

I assessed the 3D object, retrieved all the necessary drawings from the PDGS CAD system, and compared all components with each other. A programming draft plan would be drawn up initially, so that a final draft of the program route would be produced and then programming would commence according to this. The program would be put through an initial trial run; this initial trial run would locate bugs or errors in the program. These would be changed or amended and the process would be repeated several times until the program ran smoothly and completed its intended application. All measured data would be collected and assessed within a statistical package. I became expert at using SAM UX, a statistical program used for the evaluation of measured results currently in use by the FORD MOTOR COMPANY.

Part of my function with Fords as a quality engineer was making sure the sub-assembly and full body sides, engine compartment etc was dimensionally correct and within tolerances, made sure that the SPC charts were up to date for ISO9001 standards. Made sure that as part of routine checks the SPC charts were updated daily, which meant recalculating the charts when required.

I was also required to do 8D investigation (correct reaction plan). If there was a problem found with a part during routine, I was required to find out why it occurred, recheck several more parts when the problem had been resolved and carry out a capability study to ensure it was stable.

I was also involved in the launch of the new Fiesta, particularly for its safety components i.e. bumper fixing brackets, seatbelts brackets and body sides frame. I was part of a team involved in the quality and dimensional side using the CMM/SMM machine in Fords.
