DTCC, or Depository Trust Clearing Corp, is the premiere Clearing & Settlement Services Company in the United States. DTCC systems announce, clear & Settle, as well as provide other relevant financial services of all types for the processing of Corporate Actions on securities of various types. These securities include, but are certainly not limited to, Equities, Bonds, Unit Investment Trusts (UITs), Collateralized Mortgage Objects (CMOs), Papers and Notes, and many others. DTCC is the largest securities depository in the world followed by EuroClear in Belgium and Clearstream in Luxembourg which are the second and third largest respectively.

DTCC used to communicate financial data affecting participants’ accounts to participants via functions available over computer to computer facility (CCF) and Data Transmission Facility (DTF). The functions returned variable length data records at different times during the day conveying information using reserved positions and fixed lengths for each field. This was DTCC’s standard way of providing data to its participants. Other depositories and vendors in other countries had their own standards for sending and receiving data thereby leading to a lot of expensive customized processing necessary for handling all the different “standards”.

Northern Trust’s response to DTCC’s transformation initiative is Global Entitlements Hub, or GEH. GEH is carrying NT’s Entitlements processing out of the 20th century and into the bright, exciting, and sometimes chaotic world of the 21st century.
