I’ve fabricated patterns used in making parts for spacecraft, missile’s and associated equipment. Designed, laid out and performed all manufacturing and machining processes required in the development of various wooden patterns, combination wood-metal match and split patterns using various plastics, Teflon etc. for patterns used by, foundry and sheet metal manufacturing units in the manufacturing, forming or molding of various castings of non-ferrous or ferrous metals and plastic compounds. From various points, section drawings, or hand drawn sketches, I develop my layout and design of space shuttle and missile parts or assemblies using reverse/mirror layout, complete coring or partial coring, wherein irregular of cylindrical split section core design (dovetailing) and various tangent projections, planes, bosses, webbing, etc. are inherent, and where various shop practices must be considered in making proper design, cope, drag, spruce, riser, gate, draft, etc. to enable the molding process to be accomplished. Always taking into consideration that shrinking will occur enabling the molding process to be properly accomplished. I consider the metal thickness and anticipate shrinking and the effect of chill while laying out more complex core molds for larger castings and contours. I’ve laid out section views in patterns and core developments. And because of my knowledge of (GDT) geometric dimensioning and tolerancing I allow for proper fit during assembly. I understand that all pattern making is a process and I use this step by step approach to select proper materials. I Mark off my full scale size layout of pattern parts and utilize various wood working and machining tools, molding devices and/or jigs in the machine and hand forming processes. Utilize GDT (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) for specific parts some being in thousandths others within 1/64th or 1/32nd of an inch. (.03211 - .01511). I gradually shape patterns to the desired dimension frequently checking dimensions with calipers, proportional dividers, scales, T squares etc. and contour to specifications. Or use contour programming in turned and milled workpieces with the aid of integrated contour editor in CNC control systems. I’ve laid out section views in patterns and designed cores. And because of my knowledge of (GDT) I allow for proper fit during assembly. Assemble pattern and/or mold parts using proper joinery and apply appropriate protective sealers and finishes for protection. In the event of a failed mold or pattern I reconnect with machinists, sheet metal mechanics and other specialists to determine remedy. I always follow established safety rules/directions and never endanger myself or any co-workers. I usually perform work independently.
