Self-Taped Audition Instructions

Casting Director: Alison McBryde April 2020

Casting Assistant: Evelyn Torres

Hello Everyone,

Please don't be intimidated by the lengthy instructions below. Since we have the time, I want you to prepare an audition that highlights the best you have to offer as an actor. I also want you to avoid common mistakes that many actors make when self-taping. Take your time to prepare and create an audition you are proud of. The deadline for submission has been set for at least two weeks from now. If you have questions, please ask. And, most important of all: Have fun and enjoy the process. Regards,

Alison

Basic Guidelines

1) Do not spend money to create these videos. Use the equipment and resources you have. Use a video camera or computer/tablet camera. Do not use mobile phone cameras. A built-in mic is fine but check your audio quality. 2) Use a reader without violating social distancing. If you have no one at home to read with you, have a friend read with you over speaker phone. If no one is available, as a last resort, pre-record yourself reading the other character(s)' lines. If using the latter option, you will need to work out the timing of the scene before recording the lines. 3) Record in a quiet, well lit room without a glare or echo. Ideally, the background should be off-white to medium light grey or blue. Check video and audio for clarity before recording your audition.

4) Wardrobe, hair, and make-up should be appropriate for a Producer/Director's callback. 5) You do not have to be off book, though it is ideal. If you do need the sides during your taping, please keep them out of frame as much as possible. Place them in such a way that you are not constantly looking down.

6) Use EcoCast to submit your audition. ActorsAccess is waiving their usual fee for this service. Take advantage. If for some reason you cannot use EcoCast, you may use Vimeo,WeTransfer or Dropbox but, please, password protect your videos. Note on EcoCast: The closer you are to the submission deadline, the slower the uploads are likely to be. If you upload on the last day, please begin your uploads at least three hours before the cut off time. This should allow you adequate time if the uploads are going slowly. Audition Material – You will be choosing your own audition materials. This is your opportunity to self-cast and create your ideal self-taped audition. Choose role(s) that you connect to, that are age-appropriate, and that you could be cast in today. You will prepare three (3) videos. The first one is the slate and the second two may be a combination of contrasting work: One Dramatic Piece and One Comedic or Light-Hearted Piece. At least one piece must be self-taped for this audition. Your options are: Two (2) contrasting scenes appropriate for film and/or television. One scene and one monologue

One scene and your demo deel

One dramatic scene and a short standup routine (for comics) Scenes should be no more than 2.5 pages long (script format). Monologues and stand-up should be no more than 1:30 minutes. Demo reels should be no more than 3:30 minutes.

You may use a pre-recorded scene for one of your audition pieces but at least one video should should be recorded for this auditon.

The Audition (The titles of your video files should include your name.) Video #1

Slate - a) Full body shot directly to camera then turn 1/4 to each side for profiles. b) Zoom in for an ECU directly to camera then turn 1/4 to each side for profiles. c) State your name, height, role(s) you are reading and source, location, and contact/representation information (or direct contact information). Personality – If there is only one thing you can tell me about yourself as an actor, what is it? What is one thing do you want me to know about yourself as an individual? Note: If you have no one to shoot the video, you may use a fixed camera position and cut between the different framing.

The above information should also be included on screen. If you are not able to create titles on your video, the above information should be included on screen using a paper slate. Type the information on a sheet of paper and shoot a close-up of this at the end of your video slate. Use a font size of 24 pts or larger. See attachment. Videos #2 and #3

At least one video should be shot in MCU – a few inches below the shoulders and up. Most of the action should be directed towards, not necessarily directly at, the camera. Try to record yourself a few feet away from the back wall to avoid shadows. Additional Information

Please upload a photo and your current resume. Your resume, or an additional note, should include your contact information, including representation's name, phone, and email address and your phone and email address. If you are unable to upload this with your audition videos, please send it to add7by@r.postjobfree.com. If you have special skills like singing, dancing, fluency in other languages, military or law enforcement experience, etc., please make sure these are highlighted on your resume, included in your note, or on your slate. (These are just examples; please highlight skills and/or experience in which you have an expertise.)
