QUALITY PROCESS IMPROVEMENT INTERN

Collaborated cross-functionally with Endoscopy, Operation (OR), Pre-op, PACU, and Post-operation for a project within the Surgery Department project. It was QI project to find the root causes combined with lean six sigma project for cancellation, delayed, and no-show with seven month base for various physicians.

In the QI project, cancelled and no-show cases were recorded in real time and then retrospectively reviewed monthly and at the end of the study period, the team reviewed all day of surgery cancelled cases to confirm the reason for cancellation and to judge the event as avoidable or unavoidable.

Reduced the number of cancellations, no-show rate, and delayed cases within 1 month period and further by more than 2% or higher by implementing various strategies.

Streamlined the registration, Pre-admission testing, admission process, endoscopy procedure, PACU, and discharge process by identifying the causes and providing the quality improvement tools for each step.

Constructed process maps, root cause diagrams, value stream map, identify 7 wastes: map the process for all points of access to discharge of patients after result. Also, identified scheduling system, the reminder system, hot-line for patient engagement, turnaround time, waiting list, surgeon schedules, recognizes the root cause of cancellation and no-show, reminder system gaps, centralized cancellation system, checklist, and more.

Directed the QI project for Endoscopy Department, formulated and implemented QI tools to reduce wait-time, cancellations, and no-shows for various physicians in the departments. Also, make sure each step is communicated clearly whether that's patient arrival time, physician arrival time, patient transferred to surgery department, discharge time, education of cost that affecting the case which will help the quality of endoscopy cases tremendously.

Constructed a Patient Satisfaction Survey and conducted telephone surveys and in-person to obtain patient feedback, all with team approval and determined areas requiring service improvement. Obtained 85% patient satisfaction survey scores regarding care, efficiency, and service at the hospital. As a result, unplanned surgical variations reduced communication gap, managed time, improved workflow efficiency, and improved employee engagement.

Participated in intensive mock survey for hospital regulations, attended safety huddle meetings, senior executive meetings, shadowing and learned about various administration such as cath lab, ambulatory setting, trauma emergency department, lab and pathology, etc.
