WORK EXPERIENCE

I have always enjoyed conveying knowledge with particular reference to empowerment and self-actualization. I have taught MBA and MBL students at the University of South Africa (School of Business Leadership – SBL) and students at the Institute of Personnel Management, where I was subject principal (industrial relations) for a number of years. I did on going English teaching for students from many different cultures and language groups. This included; Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans, etc. Many of these learners had no or very little English, and I had to employ innovative teaching methods to accommodate this. I was actively involved in; consulting in all spheres of HR, part-time University lecturing (Labour law), Labour law representations and litigation, and dispute resolution which included being appointed by government as a Commissioner, for Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration

(CCMA). Further, my participation and activities in other cultures has been an integral part of my life. My wife and I decided to travel, work, and teach English abroad. We taught English in Changchun China which was a great experience. We were approached and received an offer to teach English at the University of Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, which we accepted. English Language Educator - Victoria Foreign Language School, Changchun China. April 2012 - April 2013

I taught English to all ages of students at private and government schools. My forte remains older learners (from age 14 years up) and I taught a lot of teenagers and adults. My teaching experience includes; one-on-one teaching, small groups, and groups of up to 90 students.

1. Teaching Plans

I developed teaching plans for students of all ages, including adults. Such teaching plans have included carefully monitored exposures to Western sports, religions, social activities (restaurants, cuisine, eating habits and rituals, etc) and politics, etc. Some have been as short as a week and other teaching plans developed are for as long as one year. Some schools where we taught required a set structured syllabus to be followed. 2. Teaching Methods

I adopt a highly interactive style of teaching with particular reference to sentence construction and pronunciation. Free speech and techniques to stimulate dialogue are integral to my teaching style. I am of the view that student participation enhances the learning experience, therefore my classes are student centered.

3. Newsletter / HR

I was asked to initiate this and launch this for the organization. Due to my background in Labour law and HR I was asked to consult and assist on a number of issues. English Language Educator with Al Khaleej Education and Training- Saudi Arabia. May 2013 to June 2014.

I was on the University of Tabuk examination team, and then decided to spend more time teaching. At University of Tabuk we followed ‘New Headway Plus’ syllabus for beginner, elementary, and pre-intermediate learners. We also used the ‘Northstar’ syllabus for medical students. I taught English to medical students, with particular reference to medical terminology and presentation skills.

Thereafter, I taught in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. I taught “gifted students” at Aramco and at Aramco Schools. This project was a great success and I was requested to continue and teach with the next rollout of this program.

Next, we went to Riyadh to assist with teaching conversation English to Arabic students of all ages.

Upon expiry of my one-year contract, I was requested to renew my contract for another year. I declined, as, based on previous discussions with Dr. Haytham from Assrooh Company, I joined this company for better prospects.

Educator with Assrooh Company from August 2014, based at Saudi Electronic University

(SEU), initially in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

More recently, based in Al Ahsa for the past 5 years. I was pleased and fortunate to join this project which is based on “blended education”. My main focus was to follow a syllabus geared to preparing students for the government STEP exam. SEU students are serious and committed to learning English. Due to the IT focus of the project I have been exposed to EF (English First) and BB (BlackBoard Collaborate) allowing me to monitor student’s progress on virtual (online) classes and completion of study units. What goes hand in hand with this is using fortnightly reports to motivate and inspire students with on-going counseling and problem solving.

I did extensive English editing.

In Al-Ahsa I managed the start–up SEU team and enjoyed the friendliness of this small city and the commitment and work ethic of the students.

After 5 years the student numbers have increased significantly due to hard work and commitment by the Al-Ahsa team.

The advent of Covid-19 resulted in the last 6 weeks of teaching being done exclusively online. This meant 5 hours of teaching English online every day. The University academic year ends in April. My wife and I have decided to focus on teaching English online.
