Duties as a Heavy Duty Mechanical Service Technician:

Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (E.T.) for diagnosing, troubleshooting, calibration, repairs, changing of configuration and checking of active code, etc., on all Caterpillar machines. After connecting the ET to the machine’s communication port, I put on the ignition, and then check the active code, logged code and status (temperature sensors, pressure sensors, speed sensors of the machine). Upon finding defective parts, they are replaced with new ones.

I carry out visual inspection of the major components on the machine for cracks, leakages and wear.

Carry out general mechanical and electrical duties including maintenance, repairs and fault diagnosis work on Sandvik drill rigs

Cleaning of major machine components such as front suspensions, axles, cab extensions, air tanks

assembling major components such as cab, air tank, axles, propeller shaft, and torque of major components, and assemble of dozers and wheel loaders which includes inspection of machine parts and assemble of blade, ripper, shank, cab, axles, rollover protectors and torque of all bolts on major and minor components

Changing of defective parts on industrial engines, (turbo chargers, crank shaft seals, engine block inspection cover seals, radiator core seals, exhaust manifold seals, oil coolers, carry out valve adjustment using feeler gauge and turning tool, set injectors with injector setting tool)

Carry out PM service on generators sets, remove and couple armature, do valve adjustments

Drill Rigs (all rigs using caterpillar engines), do engine change outs, commissioning of new and remanufactured engines, carry out injector change outs, change E- trim codes and injector cut-out test

Motor Graders, Back hoe Loaders and different range of CAT Trucks, which includes changing of down rollers, cutting edges, changing of tracks, and idlers and caring out preventive maintenance (pm) which includes changing of fuel, hydraulic oil, transmission oil filters and fuel and water separator

Engine removal and replacement includes the following: removal of radiator, removal of engine mounting bolts, removal of hydraulic hoses and air filters, then the engine is lifted out of its compartment and mounted on an engine stand. Pipes and fittings and other transferrable components are transferred to the new engine as it is installed. All oils are refilled to the manufacturers specifications, all hoses, electrical cables and other attachments are reconnected. Engine is started, and ET is connected to check for any active code while engine is being monitored for any leakage of oil or coolant.

Mid-Life Repairs which includes: changing of turbo chargers, changing of cylinder heads, changing of water pumps, checking valves clearances with a feeler gauge and adjusting MEU injectors, changing of thermostats, changing of fan belts, changing of HEUI injectors and HEUI pump

Possible causes are:

Piston oil rings worn out. Solution is to open engine covers and take off cylinder head to get access to the pistons, remove pistons and replace oil rings.

Oil filters mounting seals and gasket worn out or hardened. Solution is to remove oil filter mounting and replace worn out seals and gasket.

Engine performance is low.

Check air filter and change if it is clogged.

Open engine covers and check valve clearance or for damaged components (valve spring, valves, valve seats, tappets), and repair or replace as necessary.

Ineffective breaking.

Check pressures on slag adjustor (front and rear) or main filter which supplies hydraulic oil to scavenge pump and the brakes, if not up to the
