Resume:

MATTHEW WILLIAM CARLSON

Ready to work and make immediate impact!

Due to the ban on public meetings, stay at home orders, social distancing, and economic injuries that have resulted, I am looking to join forces with a progressive organization that can benefit from working with a strong professional.

I'm a transformational servant leader, motivational team-building manager, effective clinician, retired firefighter, inspiring educator, and business innovator highly skilled at verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, training, presentation, public speaking, and sales, maintaining customer and client relationships, working with purpose, managing time with flexibility and humor, ethical decision-making, self and process organization, along with research and evaluation looking to work remotely.

I am authorized to work in the US for any employer.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Public Speaker - Actor- Model

Cathexis Talent - Denver, CO

June 2019 to Present

I am contracted as a paid public speaker in the areas of adversity, resilience, humor, perseverance, equal parenting rights, parental alienation, performance anxiety, PTSD, firefighters, and addiction recovery. I am also contracted to perform paid acting and modeling projects on television, radio, and feature films.

Small Business Owner

Challenger Point Practice & Apparel - Winter Park, CO

December 2018 to Present

I started this as a side business to provide professional counseling, behavioral health consulting, and training in resilience and humor in the workplace, and it grew into a full time practice before the COVID-19 pandemic. I also design and sell Challenger Point Apparel and donate 10% of all sales to help scholarship trauma treatment and resilience education for those with financial need.

As the sole business owner and operator, I develop and manage the Challenger Point Apparel brand, maintain an e- commerce website and sell apparel on several social media platforms. I advertise public speaking events, webinars, and training workshops using email, YouTube, flyers, posters, and rely heavily on networking relationships. This business model requires me to continuously polish my interpersonal communication skills, hone my sales and negotiation strategies, and exercise professional writing skills. I rely heavily on creativity, servant leadership, and collaboration with like minded individuals and organizations to increase sales. One year after it was operational, I recruited potential board members and am currently assisting them in the formation of a sister company, Columbia Point Scholarship, with a federally recognized 501(c)3 status.

Primary Therapist

The Raleigh House of Hope - Watkins, CO

April 2019 to January 2020

I provided treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders as part of an intensive residential treatment program located on a large ranch in rural Colorado. This included bio-psycho-social assessments, ASAM, treatment planning, conducting initial and weekly health insurance authorization justifications, clinical documentation, interdisciplinary team staffing, along with individual, couples, family, group counseling and educational classes. While in this role, I created and facilitated a unique mental health self defense group therapy class I called “Body Based Mindfulness.” This group was used to teach behavioral health clients how to use action and movement to address anxiety, depression, and substance use recovery, promote teamwork, and to learn a diverse set of coping skills. This was always a highly requested class and some clients have sought me out after leaving this treatment program to continue attending this group.

I left this organization to live and work closer to my children.

Adjunct Faculty

Colorado Christian University - Remote

October 2018 to January 2019

I was contracted to teach graduate counseling classes using a web-based educational platform. I left this university role as I did not receive any contracts during the time I was contracted and needed to make myself available for other work at that time.

Adjunct Faculty

CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY - Remote

August 2015 to January 2019

I was contracted to draft syllabus, select course textbooks, design discussions, presentations, lectures, grade papers, and teach condensed 5-7 week undergraduate and graduate counseling and psychology classes in an online classroom environment (remote). Classes included Trauma Informed Advocacy & Crisis Intervention, Addiction Counseling, Child & Adolescent Counseling, Counseling Ethics, Physiological Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and several others. This university also periodically contracted me to design curriculum, develop new courses, and assist other adjunct faculty. I left this organization to dedicate my time to a new small business startup.

Co-Founder/Chief Executive Officer

Building Warriors, Inc. - Fraser, CO

May 2016 to December 2018

I was a Co-Founder of this Limited Liability Company (LLC), dedicated to support first responders and their families. I was instrumental in the development of this company's brand identity, policies, procedures, programs, marketing, staffing, and funding steams. I then lead the company transition from LLC to 501(c)3 and donated much of my intellectual property, time, and personal investments to the mission. I believed that providing first responders and their families with mental health services and training, the mission would be realized if the organization could seek public funding in addition to the traditional funding streams.

When the organization was restructured as a non-profit, I was named Chief Executive Officer. In this role, I was instrumental in developing six distinct programs, contracted clinical staff in 11 strategically located offices in two states (Colorado & Michigan), hired 38 clinicians and employees, coordinated numerous simultaneous training events, routinely fund-raised for program and operational needs, and established more 50 annual service contracts with fire departments and fire districts, law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities, non-profit organizations, businesses, and private corporations all within the first three years of startup. I left this organization during a time of intense personal adversity and pursued a new startup.

Integrated Health Specialist

Byers Peak Family Medicine - Winter Park, CO

October 2017 to June 2018

I provided integrated behavioral healthcare, short-term solution focused brief therapy, facilitated multidisciplinary care collaboration, and coordinated referrals with long-term treatment programs and other community support programs. This position was part of a 'State Innovation Model' (SIM) grant, which embedded behavioral health clinicians in primary care medical practices throughout the State of Colorado. This position was grant funded and funding was not continued. Televideo Therapist

The Pain Project - Phoenix, AZ

June 2017 to January 2018

I was contracted to provide cognitive behavioral therapy using a HIPPA compliant televideo platform with adult clients living with chronic pain and or emotional pain.

I did not receive any referrals from this organization and left to make myself more available for other work.

Program Director

Mind Springs Health - Granby, CO

June 2015 to December 2017

I was responsible for overseeing all aspects of a regional community mental health office and 14 staff. I was responsible for ensuring efficient and effective operations to meet the mission goals and KPIs of this 501(c)3. I worked very closely with the Board of Directors, executive leadership, administrative and clinical staff, and community partners (e.g. schools, jail, public health, non-profits, law enforcement, businesses, etc). I was responsible to ensure that all regional programming aligned with the corporate mission and vision and could be evaluated. I worked on collaborative grants to secure funding and applied for funding when and where necessary. I enjoyed working together with others to successfully achieve KPIs. I nurtured an inclusive and equitable employment culture both internally and throughout the community. This was done primarily, through a combination of transformational leadership and servant leadership approach. I truly enjoyed helping employees get and stay motivated in their work. I established local partnerships, developed collaborative initiatives, and doubled the amount of services provided in the three years I worked in this position. The community was sad to see me leave; however, I had to create space, time, and balance my work-family life so I could continue working on a doctorate degree in advanced human behavior that I started in 2013.

Clinical Supervisor of Emergency Services

San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group - Alamosa, CO

January 2013 to June 2015

I was responsible for the clinical supervision of a team of 24/7 emergency service clinicians, case managers, transportation and security personnel. I had to motivate this team to work with some of the most difficult people with severe and persistent mental illness, drug and alcohol dependence, anti-social behavior, and to provide crisis intervention across several counties in a rural region of Southwest Colorado, often times working alone and having to resolve complex problems impacting individuals, families, and communities.

While in this position, I was given the opportunity to start a "Crisis Living Room", which provided walk-in crisis intervention in a residential area. This involved program research, development, budgeting, staffing, marketing, and evaluation. I maintained standards of professional counseling and productivity practices in accordance with clinic policies and procedures. I was also responsible for directing care of clients, serving as a resource for staff, providing team leadership, along with forming and maintaining positive public relations and community partnerships through massive amounts of negotiation and persuasion.

I left this organization after accepting an advancement opportunity with a more flexible schedule.

Firefighter/Driver Operator

Oshtemo Fire Department - Kalamazoo, MI

October 2005 to January 2013

I worked as a structural firefighter, licensed medical first responder, and hazardous materials specialist. I was awarded

'Rookie of the Year' as a probationary firefighter, received several commendations for life saving and decision-making, and was given a 'Valor Award' for my role in a rescue of a family from an apartment fire. I was promoted to Driver Operator(Engineer).

In addition to my paid responsibilities, I volunteered to serve on the training committee, critical incident stress debriefing team, developed the departments first chaplaincy program, and was named the departments first 'Honorary Fire Chaplain'. I regularly volunteered to provide car seat inspections, fire prevention and education in schools and businesses. I volunteered to pursue specialist training in hazardous materials, joined the regional hazardous materials response team, was promoted to 'Team Leader', placed in charge of hazmat technician training. In 2010, with support from the department, I volunteered to work as an 'Offshore Hazardous Materials Technician' as part of the emergency response to the Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill, the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. I worked 45- days as part of a Strike Team near Ground Zero. Upon my return, I volunteered to work as a Safety Officer on the Kalamazoo River Enbridge Pipeline Oil Spill, which was one of the largest inland oil spills in U.S. history and happened to occur in Kalamazoo County, where Oshtemo Fire Department is located. I left this department to pursue a clinical position in emergency services and begin a PhD in Advanced Human Behavior.
