I am a boundary-spanner at the nexus of sustainability research, policy, and practice. My teaching reflects that. I want my students to understand the underlying science, social dynamics, and political context of environmental challenges, and success stories of their solutions. My students learn to debate key issues with evidence at their disposal, and also learn why many of the people they talk to make environmental decisions based on factors other than scientific evidence.

My courses will prepare students for work in public service, business, academia, or simply being more aware and conscientious citizens. I will assign readings and facilitate small- group discussions that build critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, and foster systems thinking. Students will use reading guides to learn how to efficiently glean and distill key ideas from scientific articles, books, and the media. Research activities will help students to get a sense of the range of qualitative and quantitative methods used in fields related to environmental studies and sustainability. Writing exercises will help students learn to articulate their views about environmental dilemmas and controversies. Team projects will help develop students’ abilities to work as part of a team to create written and visual documents and make presentations, in-person and online. Consulting projects with local organizations aim to expose students to relevant, real-world issues, and to design feasible solutions that may actually be implemented. I will integrate social media, music and film into lectures and assignments to help make lessons memorable.

I have experience designing curricula, facilitating training, and mentoring students in diverse contexts. For example, I have mentored interns at local organizations working on unique projects that measurably reduced greenhouse gas emissions. I also led monthly professional development trainings for these interns. As a teaching assistant, I coordinated a study trip to a local village that helped students collect data for projects in sustainable urban design that they presented to municipal staff. I also served as a translator for foreign students, helping them to understand lectures and complete hands-on coursework. I have experience designing curricula related to energy and energy efficiency for a large public utility. In addition to creating engaging, participatory coursework that stimulates critical thinking, I hope to be a role model and mentor for students as they navigate their understanding of complex environmental issues and their own career paths.
