Project Name: Feasibility Study and Preliminary Design of Dar-es-salaam Commuter Railway.

Duration: May. 2016 – February, 2017.

Main Project Features: The project involved potential railway line investigations and analysis of the City of Dar-es-salaam. Then route reconnaissance was done to ascertain main features of the corridors. Selection of railway alignment followed after reconnaissance. Feasibility study by using Cost and benefit analysis was conducted. Upon identifying possible railway lines, priority scheme to rank their importance was established. Preliminary design of railway line was then done.

Activities Performed:

Desk study to document population density and demography of city inhabitants thereby identify potential corridors;

Corridors Investigations and analysis;

Route selection of railway alignment;

Railway alignment route reconnaissance;

Selection and location of passengers and freight terminals;

Geographical Information System (GIS) in collaboration with Multi - Criteria Evaluation (MCE) was used;

Factors influencing station location were identified namely; Land use; Transport connectivity; Community population density and demography; Topographical features of land (slopes); Conservation areas were avoided i.e. water bodies.

Railway structures analysis and design;

Design of railway / permanent way pavement;

Feasibility study for the commuter railway network;

Project Name: Rehabilitation and Expansion of King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Duration: January, 2007 – June, 2008.

Main Project Features: The project involved structural strengthening and widening of pavements of three parallel runways, each 4000 metres; design and construction of new Hajj Terminal Aircraft Apron with an area of 1000m x 200m; construction of two new control towers and other accessory buildings. Budget was estimated to be 1.0 Billion Saud Real (350 Million USD).

Perform technical audit on completed road construction Project. Mai-Mahiu to Nakuru Road (105kms) in Kenya:

Take photos for every 250m, foresight and backsight;

Measure rut for outer wheel pass and inner wheel pass for every 250m;

Drill cores to obtain thickness of pavement for every 1.0km of the road;

Conduct FWD measurements for every 250m of the road for both lanes of a two way highway;

Evaluate the data collected by using World class tools, Elmond software to analyze FWD data;

Review pavement designs for airports and roads. Inter alia: Upgrading of Julius Nyerere International Airport in Tanzania; rehabilitation of Mwanza Airport in Tanzania using FAA software - LEDFA;

Project: Rigid Pavement Design for Provincial road in Limpopo

Province, South Africa.

Main Project Features:

The provincial road Authority required a concrete road for heavy traffic;

The Axle loads were (KN): 80 (20%); 90 (40%); 100 (30%); 110 (10%); with their percentage occurrence in brackets;

Position: Pavement Design Engineer.

Activities Performed:

Traffic was characterized to obtain the design axle load;

Two types of concrete pavements were designed, plain jointed ; and dowel jointed by using CNCPave as well as Mechanistic Design first principles;

The most appropriate pavement in term of life cycle costing was selected.

Project: Flexible Pavement Design for Provincial road in Western

Cape Province, South Africa.

Main Project Features:

The provincial road Authority required a flexible pavement road for heavy traffic;

Statistics for traffic loads were given;

Position: Pavement Design Engineer.

Activities Performed:

Traffic was characterized to obtain the design axle load;

Flexible pavement was designed by Mechanistic Method by using BISAR software;

Different thicknesses of sub-base (cement stabilized), base (granular), and asphalt concrete to withstand the desired cumulative design axles were established;

Project: Flexible Pavement Design to rehabilitate bitumen

surfaced Provincial road in Western Cape Province, South

Africa.

Main Project Features:

The provincial road Authority required to rehabilitate bitumen surfaced road for heavy traffic;

The road was important as it was used to transport agricultural produce to markets.

Position: Pavement Design Engineer.

Activities Performed:

Traffic was characterized to obtain the design axle load;

Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) was used to obtain deflections for establishing stiffness modulus of the existing pavement layers;

Appropriate pavement strengthening was established to withstand the desired design axle load.

Project: Reconstruction of Chalinze – Segera Road Section.

Position Held: Assistant Executive Engineer.

Activities performed:

Visual condition survey of the road section to record pavement defects namely; rutting, cracking; shoving, pot-holes;

Opening of trial pits in every one kilometres to ascertain the subsurface conditions along the road for reconstruction;

Laboratory tests to classify the types of soils along the road alignment;

Compaction characteristics tests of the soils encountered;

Perform California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test to ascertain the strengths of different subgrades along the road alignment.

Project: Investigation of Premature Failure of Dar-es-salaam International Airport Apron Pavement.

Position Held: Assistant Executive Engineer.

Activities performed:

Visual condition survey to record asphalt pavement defects namely; rutting, cracking; shoving;

Pavement coring to ascertain the extent and magnitude of cracking;

Bitumen extraction from cores to establish the grade of bitumen used and aggregate structure;

From the investigation we recommended a rigid pavement for the apron.

Project: Rehabilitation of Mwanza Airport.

Position Held: Assistant Executive Engineer.

Activities performed:

Visual condition survey to record pavement defects namely; rutting, cracking; shoving;

Different sizes of aggregates were collected from the quarry. Combination of the stones was done to ensure that the obtained grading fell with in the FAA specification envelop. The maximum quantity of fines were kept at 8%;

Compaction test was performed to establish the moisture density relationship;

California Bearing Ratio (CBR) was conducted to ensure that, the minimum value of 80 is obtained. Literature documented that, the higher the dry density the higher the CBR;

Shear strength test was conducted to establish the frictional angle (ø) and cohesion (c) used to define the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelop. The parameters were then put in the relation, Ì=c + σtanø to model the granular material. The higher the ø the more resistance is against aircraft wheel rutting.

Project: Geotechnical Investigations For Foundation Design of Transmission Tower at Nyakipambo, Iringa.

Position Held: Assistant Executive Engineer.

Activities performed:

Open a borehole to ascertain subsurface conditions of the soils;

Collect sample of soils for every change of soil type for laboratory tests and prediction of soil behaviour upon loading;

Perform SPT test for every change of soil type to estimate the shear strength of the soil;

From the investigation foundation depth and shear strength were established.

Project: Geotechnical Investigations For Foundation Design of Four Stories Structure for TANESCO in Tanga, Tanzania.

Position Held: Assistant Executive Engineer.

Activities performed:

Open a boreholes to ascertain subsurface conditions of the soils within the site at which the structure was to be erected;

Collect sample of soils for every change of soil type for laboratory tests and prediction of soil behaviour upon loading;

Perform SPT test for every change of soil type to estimate the shear strength of the soil;

From the investigation foundation depth and shear strength were established.

Name of Project: Rehabilitation of Maccarratane – Massingir Road, Mocambique (104 kms).

Main Project Features: Rejuvenation of seal along 40 kilometers; reconstruction of new culvert for 47 water transverse crossings. Reconstruction of 67 kms of base and double surface dressing. The project budgeted was 3.5 Million USD.

Main Project Features: Upgrading of gravel road to bitumen standard. The road length was 75 kms.

oNon-destructive testing of gravel and subgrade later to a depth of about 800mm by means of DCP to ascertain its strength and remaining life;

oSupervision of the rehabilitation works.

Name of Project: Rehabilitation of Macia - Chokwe Road, Mocambique (72 kms).

Main Project Features: Strengthening of asphalt concrete surface along 20 kilometers by a 20mm asphalt surface layer; reconstruction of new base and surface for the remaining 52 kilometres.

oSelection of cost-effective upgrading options using the nearly available materials;

oPrepare contract documents and procurement of contractor;

oSupervision of the rehabilitation works.

Name of Project: Innovative Construction Techniques (Otta Seal) Pilot Projects, Moçambique. Funded by Sweden (SIDA).

Position: Pavement Engineer.

Main Project Features: The project entailed piloting suitability of Otta seal construction technique to Moçambique environment for low volume roads. The trials comprised of three projects in provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane each with a stretch of 25 kilometres. The concept was to use the readily available construction materials to sustain future similar projects. In Maputo the pavement consisted of readily available granular materials as base and Otta seal as a surface. In Gaza, the pavement consisted of lightly cemented (5%) sand base and surfaced by Otta seal. In Inhambane province, the base consisted of calcrete mechanically stabilised by fine sand. The budget for the projects was about 145 Million Meticas.

Activities performed:

oSelection of cost-effective pavement option in each province;

oTesting of locally available material to ascertain of their suitability as pavement materials;

oMechanically stabilizing calcrete by fine sand to obtain base material for low volume road in terms of plasticity and CBR. From this task, I managed to develop a decision support system/ software to select a suitable material for base. If material not suitable perform mechanical stabilisation;

oDesigning cement stabilised sand mixes for low volume roads;

oPreparing tender documents and procurement;

oSupervising the construction process.

Name of Project: Rehabilitation of Sehitwa - Shakawe Road, Botswana (230 kms).

Main Project Features: Rehabilitation of the road to restore pavement and associated structures.
