Director of Technology

West Nottingham Academy - Colora, MD

May 2012 to October 2016

This position entails managing the campus network topology for both legacy systems as well as newer educational initiatives for a private boarding/day high school. The school had not a full-time IT professional for an extended period of time and had relied on a local outsourcing firm for critical support only. Lacking any formal documentation or 'handshake' from previous Technology Director, I initially had to quickly become familiar with the infrastructure while managing outstanding support and technical issues for approximately 50 employees and over 125 students. Once the immediate concerns had been handled, I undertook the task of documenting the IT landscape so deficiencies could be identified so that I could define the scope of bringing the campus to a stable, robust environment that could evolve with the school. Some of the more-involved tasks included migrating legacy SQL Server 7/2000/2005, into SQL Server 2008. Purpose-based back-end database systems such as PCR Campus, Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge, Follett School Solutions, and several proprietary systems that the school was well entrenched.

Due to the diverse nature of supporting a considerable International student population with regard to email communications, the MS Exchange 2007 on-premises mail server was migrated to Office 365 for Education. This solution proved to be the best Cloud-based system for the current and future goals of the school, which coordinated with the migration to Cloud solutions for departments such as Admissions, Business Office, and curriculum/learning aspects of the school.

With the lack of any unified Wi-Fi infrastructure except for small pockets of isolated Wi-Fi networks, there was a desperate need for a campus-wide Wi-Fi network for students, faculty, and support staff. After evaluating several offerings of hardware and software-based controllers, I installed Ubiquiti Networks Long-Range Access Points for all of the administrative, classrooms, student dormitories, and faculty/staff housing. This software-based controller solution offered scalability and portability as Access Points could be moved and/or added to handle network traffic demands for a growing student population.

Additional initiatives that I was involved with -- Develop and administer the Technology Department's operating and capital budgets; assess new computing technologies and the feasibility of system enhancements to determine the potential value. Supervise the ordering, acquisition, inventorying, and disposition of hardware and software Serve as the primary contact with outside vendors in the generation of RFPs, bids, contracts, and maintenance agreements. Approve all purchases and expenditures Meet with faculty, staff and management to assess and evaluate Technology needs; oversee the development, design, and implementation of new applications and the upgrades and/ or enhancements to existing applications to meet identified needs.. Ensure Technology assets were maintained responsibly; safeguard the security and privacy of the Technology systems. Ensure the integrity and continual operation of networks; develop, review, and certify all back-up and disaster recovery procedures and plans. Ensure the availability, continuity, and security of all Technology software applications; manage software licenses, SSL certificates, and maintenance agreements. Oversaw the development of all Technology training programs; ensure appropriate training was conducted on all software applications as required; Develop, review, and revise all Technology policies to guarantee the integrity of the data; set procedures for the creation, maintenance and deletion of user accounts. Developed and supervised the ongoing operations of the Technology helpdesk to ensure the excellence and timeliness of support; interact with computer users to help resolve escalated technology issues; solicit feedback from users on the quality of service received; Provide the highest level of customer service and professionalism to all faculty, staff, student population, and management.
