University of Portsmouth; Sept 2018 - June 2022

BEng (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering (2nd Year), University of Portsmouth.

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Grade/s: First year GPA average of 3.79 (1st / 71%)

Experience, skills and knowledge:

Worked as part of a team to design a glider with a launcher in order to meet academic criteria. We planned, sketched and discussed design ideas before developing a final idea and project plan. I personally created 3-D printed parts using FlashPrint and Inventor in workshops. In order to input the detailed and assembled drawings AutoCad 2019 was used. This project enabled me to further develop skills in research by testing and analysing, which included material costs, design concepts, dimensions, forces, stresses and practical appliance.

Given a practical real-world problem, I was asked to help design and develop an innovative product to lift heavy objects to the rear of domestic vehicles. I personally came up with innovative ideas to meet certain academic criteria before sketching initial ideas and submitting them in a formal report. I presented the project to the class and this developed my confidence in communicating and presenting to an audience, to identify and define a problem and to apply strategic problem-solving methods and procedures. Software used in this process included: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Design a gearbox for a drive system to provide power from an engine to a powered shaft. Using my knowledge and skills from maths, solid mechanics, dynamics and mechanical engineering principles, I was able to demonstrate my ability to utilise engineering calculations to size features and components and make effective use of standard components in an engineering design.

Hobbies and Interests

Skydiving - Joining the university’s Skydive Society I loved the thrill of the experience but also embracing the formidable and awe-inspiring views. The drop zone is hosted by the Army Parachute Association where military grade skydiving is taught.

Snowboarding - I began snowboarding in Cyprus and then went on to learn freestyle in an indoor snow centre in the UK where I achieved my freestyle level. I go to ski trips in France annually where I embrace the great French Alps.

Wake boarding - I decided to transfer my snowboard skills to the Mediterranean Sea when visiting Cyprus.

Film making - From skydiving, snowboarding and summers at home in Cyprus, I enjoy gathering footage at every step of the way. I capture my memories by creating and editing my own clips and shots with SonyVegas into montages that I share with friends and family via YouTube. You can view my work on my channel: FlyinV.
