ARCELOR MITTAL

Arcelor Mittal South Africa has been in existence since 1928 when the company, then called Iscor, with its first works in Pretoria, was founded as a statutory parastatal organisation. The objectives of establishing the company were, to produce iron and a range of steel and to create employment opportunities for communities close to its operations. The first steel was tapped from the open-hearth furnace at the Pretoria Works on 4 April 1934. Wartime needs for steel and the local manufacture of numerous necessities brought about a sharp increase in demand which necessitated the expansion of the company. In 1942 the Iscor Company established to meet the increasing demand for steel in South Africa.

The plate mill at Vanderbijlpark Works was commissioned in 1943 mainly for the production of heavy plate for ship repairs and the manufacture of armoured cars for South Africa’s war effort. Directly after the war in early 1947, the company decided to build a fully integrated steel works in Vanderbijlpark. Iscor started trading in 1947.

TRANSNET RAIL ENGINEERING

Transnet Rail Engineering, formerly known as Transwerk, is a subsidiary of Transnet whose business it is to keep South Africa's trains rolling. According to the Operational Report at Transnet, Transnet Rail Engineering's responsibility includes "the maintenance, upgrade and manufacture of locomotives, wagons, coaches, rolling stock components and associated transport equipment". The company operates seven factories in South Africa. Transnet Rail Engineering maintains sales offices in 7 European countries, 11 African countries and in Australia.

RAND WATER

In 1886 when gold was discovered in the Witwatersrand scarcity of water was a problem.

At the time water was drawn from the Fordsburgspruit, as well as from a spring at the eastern end of Commissioner Street, near the present day End Street. The source was named Natalspruit. Another water point was a spring at the site of the present Johannesburg General hospital in Parktown. Later it was realised that more water was needed for the processing of ore.

Water Supply by private enterprises

The growing demand for water that reached a demand of between 2, 89 Ml/d and 5, 86 Ml/d, prompted other small companies to start operating, like the Braamfontein Water Company and the Vierfontein Syndicate (1893).The Braamfontein Water Company supplied some 0, 6 Ml/d to the Parktown area from two wells in that part of the town. The Vierfontein Syndicate supplied water of different qualities, one for mining purposes and the other for potable use.

ENVIRO CAST

Established in early 2014, Enviro-Cast initially focused on the manufacture of precast concrete kerb stones for the civil industry. It has subsequently extended it’s range to include building bricks and blocks, cobble stones, flagstones, pool copings and interlocking and bevel paving. Enviro-Cast’s factory is located in Meyerton, Gauteng. It operates a laboratory to ensure that its bricks and blocks meet the applicable quality standard of the SA Bureau of Standards, pending acceptance of its application for the SABS mark of approval. The company owns a fleet of trucks for transporting aggregates and other materials used in its manufacturing processes and for the delivery of product to customers.
